If I purchased a gun on the 19th of this month, what day should I be able to pick it up? I would think the 29th, but the shop told me the 1st. What's the rule on this?

Ten consecutive 24 hour periods. Some stores make you wait until the 11th day however. These posts are Fiction. They do not contain legal advice, which can only be given by a lawyer. 10 24hr periods from the time they run the DROS in the computer, it should be stamped on your receipt/paperwork from the shop exactly when they ran it. They probably told you the 1st because they forgot that 2008 is a leap year and that there are 29 days - normally from the 19th in Feb. with 28 days would mean it's the 1st of March. You should legally be able to pick it up on or after the timestamp on your receipt the 29th.Comment

It should only be 10 consecutive 24-Hour periods meaning your pick-up date should be the 29th at whatever time your DROS got sent through. Some retailers such as Big 5 will do 11 days so a person can simply pick it up anytime starting that day instead of having to look at the specific time the DROS was entered. It's really just to make it easier on the employees who at times are not the brightest of the bunch.Comment

10 x 24hrs = 2400hrs later.
But since you are waiting for you new love. You tend to count time by minutes.
144000 mins later.

Yeah the 11 day thing ain't really legal and I suppose if you held the FFLs feet to the fire they would have to release it after ten 24 hour periods, however I can sure understand why they do the 11 day thing. First if keeps them out of trouble if an employee doesn't check the time, second it prevents quarrels with customers who arrive too early on the 10th day and get irritated at being told to come back in 2 hours or whatever.
So if they say 11 days I just go with it as I figure they aren't trying to screw me just keep themselves out of trouble. And in CA who can blame them for that?Comment

They are trying to keep EVERYONE involved out of trouble. Especially the employee that releases a gun before the 10 days is up...even 5 minutes early...ouch

I need to learn basic arithmetic again. 19+10=29. It SHOULD be the 29th.
The way the "11 day rule" was explained to me at big 5 is that they don't process the DROS until the 24 hr background check passes. They probably actually do use this policy to avoid conflict over time, as stated before, though. He was a demon. He was a parasite. He was a cancer. We were the cure.
