    Fluting or no fluting

Going to order a AR15 barrel for an SPR/3 gun inspired build. How imporant is fluting and am I really going to get any advantage out of it? Does it make a big difference in weight? All opinions welcome.

It's for looks only, weight savings is miniscule at best and faster cooling... well it helps a bit.

So I take It would not be worth the $100 they charge for it?

I have a 24” target barrel which is fluted… main reason I got it is just because I like the way it looks.

More surface area help with cooling and a small amount of weight reduction is nice but it really wasn’t the main reason I got it. Just an added perk.

I am more about fuction over form. I admit it looks cool but I think buying the gas block and tube along with a few other things for that $100 would be a better option if the advantages are not that noticeable.

We did not talk about the one other attribute, They say it does make a barrel a bit stiffer than a non fluted one, but! is that a good thing or bad? Good in some cases others not so much. In a short heavy barrel I say it does nothing. Remember stiffness plays the part in the harmonics of a barrel. As for the $100 I say it's not wasted $$$ spent even if only for the looks.

The advantages are there… it’s just up to you to determine if it’s worth it or not.

Which barrel are you looking at anyways?

You would be better off getting a light weight profile and a heat sink.

Yeah I was thinking about getting the satin finish on it. Off topic a bit but I have a BCG ready to go. Would buying a headspaced bolt along with the barrel be a waste since I already have one?
