I could rig a cell phone solenoid to one of these.

Be careful what you store in self-storage. Especially is you use military-type containers/crates. Storage personnel are aware that these facilities can be used for storing materials that are not kosher since 9/11. I had this discussion yesterday. They can and will call appropriate agencies if they perceive any potential issues and they also profile... They called the local LE and FBI on more than one occassion...

I'm thinking of putting a few safes worth of guns and ammo in self storage. Is this a good or bad idea? Are there any problems with doing this?

The only thing you should store in any self-storage facility are things you won't miss if they're gone.

Firearms and ammo shouldn't be included in that category.
