    Self-Storage

I'm thinking of putting a few safes worth of guns and ammo in self storage. Is this a good or bad idea? Are there any problems with doing this?

If you do it, do it discreet, so no one would target your storage.

Moisture control might be an issue in most storage places.

As far a legality of storing firearms in storage=cluess.
'Cuz big holes are easier to see.

You can correct my spelling and grammar error anytime.
I welcome it. How else would I learn.

I think its a bad idea just because you dont know if you can realy trust the people that works at the storage place, and if someone ever see you put a safe in there it gives the impreasion that thers some thing important and valueable stuff in it. And you cant bolt the safe securely there.Leaving it for a long period of time God forbids that some one would break in it and have more time to break in it. Remember you are resposible for your guns. Just my 0.2 cents...

Ok, I won't get a third car. I'll save room in my garage.

Remember, those walls are little more than sheet-rock. Your new neighbor could help himself to your safe by way of a utility knife. I wouldn't do it.

id leave the guns in the garage and buy a garage/awning/carport type thing for the new car. storage fees add up fast. that new carport will pay for itself in no time.

I actually have a safe in self storage, but the facility mine its in, has the metal corrugated walls. For the most part, its a pretty secure place, cameras everywhere, (and I mean everywhere!)passcode entrance to each building but your passcode wont work for a different building than your personal storage building. Things like that made me pick it!

i have always used high end storage buildings as well and kept about 15 firearms in a unit while in Iraq. get renters insurance and you should be good. I wouldnt advise storing high value or irreplaceable firearms in there though,

I'm keeping the high value, customized, and the HD guns at home, just thinking of moving the plinkers.

You don't have any trustworthy friends/family with a little extra space? I guess storage isn't the worst plan, as long as it's built like a bank in the ghetto

Anyone have a link to that news article about the guy who stored his safe in a well secured self-storage and still got his entire safe stolen?

From what I remember, passcodes were needed for entry and the security system recorded multiple unsuccessful entries. It was believed that the thieves ended up waiting for someone to enter the facility and followed in after.

The guy had his safe on the second floor of the facility and the thieves still took it. They used dumbells or something else to roll the safe to the elevator which was recorded on camera.

The guy had thousands if not a hundred thousand dollars worth of collectible firearms.

You have to make sure the cameras actually work and are not fake. Just don't use that very popular storage company for "public" "holding". The one near me has fake camera domes. I know this because the quality storage company down the street was used to store stuff stolen from the orange colored company.
Look for a place that has a wall of monitors that intermittenly switch to different cameras in the management office, seperate passwords for each building, clean, well lit, temp controlled, and has passive fire extinguishers in each unit as well as portable extinguishers.

If you can get a self storage with power, or are willing to go back every couple of weeks to change out the deep cycle batteries....

                              ...no problem...

Just make sure you get yourself an alarm with cell phone SIM card type (like the car alarms) so you are called when someone is in your storage box.

You could get an uber system that has a camera that activates and sends you an image and will allow your voice over it so you could yell at them and scare them off. Also could put in a pepper gas bomb that you could manually activate over the phone to gas them out.

I have thought about this myself. Unfortunately allot of folks who run these things or are around these storage units allot think of it as there own personal store to shop for stuff they want.
