I really dig my 6" GP 100. It's built to last and does a fine job at the range. Its my sidearm of choice when hunting and my bed side gun. I will say .357 has some serious recoil, but .38s are very moderate, so unless your mom shoots already I'd start her with .38s. I'd add a fenix ld22 light, or similar, to that and you have a great bed side combo.

For a .22 I'd go with a semi just because they're more fun. I really dig my Marlin 795, but the Rugers are awesome as well.

    Cheers!
Well, I chose the .357 because although it does have more recoil, you can also shoot .38 special rounds. Less recoil with the .38 special rounds and it can also shoot the .357 rounds if you want to pack more punch. We own a few Ruger 10/22s and I like them, but I've always wanted a bolt-action rifle. I wanted to go with a .22 bolt action rifle because of it being inexpensive and really fun to shoot even though you're not going through as many rounds. A lot of people were saying the Savage Mark II was a solid .22 rifle and even outperformed the Ruger and Marlin in some cases. Thanks for the recommendations.

      Own a few, they're nice. I just really wanted a bolt-action rifle for a .22. Thanks.

Me and my dad are going to be shooting guns probably only twice a year as an annual trip his co-workers, my brothers, friends, and nephews all go on to shoot targets, skeet, and blow up tannerite in the high desert.

Probably only around 1000 shotgun rounds a year, 2000 .22 rounds a year, 100 revolver rounds a year, and 100 semi-auto pistol rounds a year. I want to buy most of the guns on a couple of gun sites, not factory new to save money. This gun lineup I calculated would be about $1700-1800+. We want to keep it under $2000 for all of this and may not even buy all of these guns at once because we may not need all of them.

Not looking for brand names that have high resale value, e.g. Colt, Smith & Wesson, etc. Me and my dad are not gun collectors. Not here to have a discussion which guns are better and don't buy cheaper guns. We already know there are better guns, we are just trying to find the best bang for your buck guns in certain price ranges: shotguns ($500 or less), hanguns ($550 or less), .22lr ($200 or less). I just want these guns to shoot and are durable.

        Pump-action shotgun: Remington 870 Express
        Semi-auto pistol: Glock 19
        Revolver: Ruger GP100 .357
        Bolt-action .22lr: Savage Mark II FV-SR
        Over Under shotgun: Baikal MP310
You've got a good list. If you want it to be "complete," you'd want to add a semi-automatic, centerfire rifle on there somewhere, like a pistol caliber carbine, maybe a Ruger Mini-14, AR or AK, whatever floats your boat.

You are aware those run upwards of $10K, right? And if you're in CA, assault rifles are illegal. If it is an AR/AK pattern rifle you want, those are semi-auto and require a bullet button if you want "evil" features, such as a collapsible stock, or pistol grip.

A solid lineup would be: a 9mm of your choice, a 12 guage of your choice, Mosin Nagant, 223/556 of your choice, 7.62x39 of your choice, 308 or 30-06 of your choice.

I want him to get the Remington 1100 though; that was the one shotgun I had in mind besides the pump. He said he doesn't like a lot of parts in the gun, i.e. autoloading, but he also said he's fine with cleaning the guns so I'm not sure where he stands now.

One gun, two barrels. The 1100 is still popular for trap, skeet and sporting clays. You can have a short barrel for HD. They break down easy and are simple to keep clean. Recoil is soft and they will last two lifetimes. I'd rather shoot an auto than an O/U. No need for two cheap guns when you can buy one nice one for less money.

Yeah, the semi-autos were the ones I was referring to. My brother bought a colt m4 and that was really fun to shoot.

Are you going to buy a car and not test drive it? Will your mom feel comfortable on how it handles? And do you and your dad have much experience in all that power in a vehicle? My point is the same thing for a gun. You just don't go out and buy what you read about on a gun. You need to get some time in handling those guns. As for home defense you need to consider your surroundings. How close is your neighbor? Do you live in an apartment or condo or a track home where your next door neighbor's house is so close you can hear them pee? There are a lot of factors to consider on what type of firearm in which you feel the need to have. Think about it son.

What about getting a shotgun with multiple barrels, either an 1100 or an 870, and using that for skeet, trap, and HD? In the meantime you can try out some handguns and decide what you like. Please practice with your handgun more than your share of 100 rounds per year! My $.02 is that .22 is cheap enough you might as well use a semi auto, especially if you already have a 10/22.

If you're a beginner, maybe take the time to get comfortable with these two platforms before adding more.

How come you have no rifles on your wishlist?

You should get an ar or ak. I suggest an ak. It is what it is and it's true what people say about them. reliable, 7.62x39, easy to clean, mags are easy to come by, customizable, home defense or hunting, u name it

u can get one used for probably $500 range

Just a suggestion for your needs and your budget.

-Polish Radom P64- 9mm makarov, DA/SA semi auto pistol, with decocker. 6 round campacity $250-$300

-Mosin nagant M91/30 - your cheap time tested bolt action 30 cal rifle. $110

                                -Ruger 10/22: $240

                                -mossberg 500 12g big 5 combo with 18.5 inch barrel and 28 inch barrel - $340

So far that's $990. You can spend the rest on ammo or buy an AK
