Is this a solid lineup of guns for a beginner?

Me and my dad want to buy some guns for home defense, shooting targets, and skeet. I did a lot of research and picked out what I thought was the best based on people's reviews, discussions, and best bang for your buck. Me and my dad are going to be shooting guns probably only twice a year as an annual trip his co-workers, my brothers, friends, and nephews all go on to shoot targets, skeet, and blow up tannerite in the high desert.

Probably only around 1000 shotgun rounds a year, 2000 .22 rounds a year, 100 revolver rounds a year, and 100 semi-auto pistol rounds a year. I want to buy most of the guns on a couple of gun sites, not factory new to save money. This gun lineup I calculated would be about $1700-1800+. We want to keep it under $2000 for all of this and may not even buy all of these guns at once because we may not need all of them.

Not looking for brand names that have high resale value, e.g. Colt, Smith & Wesson, etc. Me and my dad are not gun collectors. Not here to have a discussion which guns are better and don't buy cheaper guns. We already know there are better guns, we are just trying to find the best bang for your buck guns in certain price ranges: shotguns ($500 or less), hanguns ($550 or less), .22lr ($200 or less). I just want these guns to shoot and are durable.

    Pump-action shotgun: Remington 870 Express
    Semi-auto pistol: Glock 19
    Revolver: Ruger GP100 .357
    Bolt-action .22lr: Savage Mark II FV-SR
    Over Under shotgun: Baikal MP310

If you're only going to shoot 50 rnds of any handgun a year, don't even think about it for any kind of defensive purpose. You'll be more of a danger to yourself, family and neighbors than to any bad guy.

It's hardly worth buying a handgun for that little of use.

Have fun with the shotgun and .22 and leave it at that.

Well the revolver we were going to buy for my mom because even though me and my dad discussed with her about shotguns being all around better for home defense, she doesn't want one. I'm guessing she's intimidated by them, too big to have for home defense, and she says she wants to shoot a handgun. The glock 19 was just going to be a backup pistol besides a revolver for shooting targets or maybe home defense. We probably weren't going to buy it for now because we don't need it.

I would buy a Remington 1100 automatic shotgun (or equivalent) and two barrels. You can use that for everything.

You can put two barrels on a Remington 1100? My dad is kind of old school with guns and he wanted a break-action the most even though it may not be the most practical and versatile. I want him to get the Remington 1100 though; that was the one shotgun I had in mind besides the pump. He said he doesn't like a lot of parts in the gun, i.e. autoloading, but he also said he's fine with cleaning the guns so I'm not sure where he stands now.

It was harder to find an acceptable break-action over under for the price range we were looking in, but a lot of people had good things to say about the Russian made Baikal MP310. I like pump-action shotguns and the Remington 870 Express is a lot cheaper than the 1100, otherwise I would buy the 1100 as well. Also to note, my dad has a bad shoulder from an accident so he said he's unable to shoot a pump effectively if multiple disks are in the air - hence why he wants a break-action or maybe an autoloading.

Your list is fine. Just go ahead and buy them but don't be too tied to your individual choices; if you find something similar at a good price, go ahead and substitute.

Then go shooting -- you'll probably end up shooting more often than you think.

              Enjoy.

People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Thanks Vegas. That's what I like about guns; they usually hold their value well as long as there is routine maintenance and not scuffing it all up in rough terrain. Most likely we will be shooting more, kind of just a side hobby. There's a lot of other hobbies we enjoy, but guns are really fun and addicting.

You're list is good. I would possibly not include the Baikal MP310. Just my opinion.

Have you owned one before or heard bad things about it? Or is it because break-action over unders aren't as nice as pumps or autoloaders.

consider adding the Ruger 10/22 to your list.

You can't go wrong with an 870. Cheap, reliable, And easily sold if you decide to upgrade to an auto loader.

I really dig my 6" GP 100. It's built to last and does a fine job at the range. Its my sidearm of choice when hunting and my bed side gun. I will say .357 has some serious recoil, but .38s are very moderate, so unless your mom shoots already I'd start her with .38s. I'd add a fenix ld22 light, or similar, to that and you have a great bed side combo.

For a .22 I'd go with a semi just because they're more fun. I really dig my Marlin 795, but the Rugers are awesome as well.

                          Cheers!

Your list is good. All solid choices. Only one I don't know about one way or the other is the Baikal. And no centerfire rifle?

People we go with have a ton of centerfire fire rifles, so it's not a priority. Maybe we will substitute a glock 19 for a centerfire fire rifle for the time being. Me and my dad definitely want to get one. I want an assault rifle and my dad wants a standard semi-auto centerfire rifle. Remington imported the Baikal MP310 and started labeling them as Remington Spartan 310s with a higher price.
