Shooting without hearing protection

The poster is correct. As a former artilleryman the purpose of opening your mouth around firing artillery is to partially equalize the overpressure between your inner ear and the outside of your eardrum. This will allow your eardrum to move without being ruptured. The noise however will cause permanent damage (I do have a disability for Tinnitus).
Use hearing protection whenever you shoot. Of course when life is on the line we don't have the time to go looking for earplugs.Comment

I'm primarily a handgun hunter and recently bought a pair of these (the digital series).
Seem to work well at the range... Will give them the true test in the field in a couple weeks.
I've been tolerating the occasional hunting shot with my ruger .44 mag and 14" TC Encore .338 federal handguns, but the 7-30 waters with a muzzle brake put me over the top. That thing is by far the loudest gun I've ever experienced... Instant ear buzz in one shot... No more of that for me. Don't want to end up with the same ears my Dad had when he got older.Comment

I don't. No one I know does. Like someone else said thinking back now I don't recall ever hearing the shot.Comment
