I've owned a couple of sets over the years and really like them. Right now I have a bulkier set of Pro Ears that are for indoors or guests, and a lighter pair for outdoors. I also use plugs if I'm at a public range but not if I'm doing IPSC or something similar where I'm the only one shooting and it's going to be all day and the comfort is more important.
The Pro Ears do a good job of just compressing the sound so you get a not very loud shot sound but then you can hear the brass hitting the dirt. The cheaper ones just kind of cut out for a second or so which can be irritating if you're talking to somebody and the volume's jumping all over the place.
