I did the same thing. I shipped a long gun using fedex and it ran me about $110 (will never do that again) using priority overnight and it took them 2 days. Filed for a refund and got it within a week. Been using UPS ever since.Comment

Only if shipping to a nonlicensee. Notification is not legally required when shipping to an appropriate FFL holder. However, since the carriers require notification, I would not skip notification unless you don't mind risking payment of any possible insurance claims.NO.
He's not right.
Federal law covers delivery to and by a common carrier. FX and UPS tariffs have required overnight shipping for several years.
Try 27CFR Part 478 Sec. 478.31 Delivery by common or contract carrier.
This section requires you to declare there's a gun in the box when you deliver it to the carrier.
