I went to a Walmart in SoCal today, and was going to buy some ammo. Im over the age of 18, and under the age of 21, so I was hoping to get some varmint rounds for my A.R. and some new .22LR's to test in my CMMG conversion kit. After waiting half an hour for the store clerk who barely spoke english, I was going to buy a 1000 round brick of M-22 ammo, to hopefully resolve some of the FTF/FTE's of the CMMG.
As soon as I go to check out the clerk tells me I have to be 21 to buy the .22lr, but I can obviously walk with the .223. I reminded him it was for use in a rifle, therefore legal for me to buy and use. (I mean I can't be the only one with a few .22 rifles right? I have been buying 22 for a few years there from the seasoned old guys who know thier laws. This guy refused to sell to me, so I asked for a manager. She was apparently also HUA, and backed the employee who didn't know the law. I rarely get frustrated, so I apologized to the manager and employee for not knowing how to do their job. I called in to the store after leaving to file a complaint with the manager, who was equally clueless. She said, and I quote "If we sell that ammo to you, we could get fired or federally prosecuted. The computer says that you have to be 21, so i'm sorry but I cant sell you that ammunition." I explained the situation that the .22 can be used in a pistol, and that is why it brings up the 21+ requirement. I told her that it was for the .22 conversion in my AR (and also my other .22's) so therefore it was legal to own and buy, and that I had bought .22 ammo countless times from that very same store. My logic is that if you don't know the laws governing the ammo that you sell and you fear liability for wrongdoing, maybe you should actually know the relevant laws to begin with!! I mean there are pistols made in .223 as well, yet I walked out of there with a box of that with no issues. Annoying
Needless to say it was a frustrating situation that I have never encountered in my years as a gun owner. Walmart needs to hire employees that actually know the laws governing what they are selling! Has anyone else had this situation happen to them?
