    Walmart ammo fail

I went to a Walmart in SoCal today, and was going to buy some ammo. Im over the age of 18, and under the age of 21, so I was hoping to get some varmint rounds for my A.R. and some new .22LR's to test in my CMMG conversion kit. After waiting half an hour for the store clerk who barely spoke english, I was going to buy a 1000 round brick of M-22 ammo, to hopefully resolve some of the FTF/FTE's of the CMMG.

As soon as I go to check out the clerk tells me I have to be 21 to buy the .22lr, but I can obviously walk with the .223. I reminded him it was for use in a rifle, therefore legal for me to buy and use. (I mean I can't be the only one with a few .22 rifles right? I have been buying 22 for a few years there from the seasoned old guys who know thier laws. This guy refused to sell to me, so I asked for a manager. She was apparently also HUA, and backed the employee who didn't know the law. I rarely get frustrated, so I apologized to the manager and employee for not knowing how to do their job. I called in to the store after leaving to file a complaint with the manager, who was equally clueless. She said, and I quote "If we sell that ammo to you, we could get fired or federally prosecuted. The computer says that you have to be 21, so i'm sorry but I cant sell you that ammunition." I explained the situation that the .22 can be used in a pistol, and that is why it brings up the 21+ requirement. I told her that it was for the .22 conversion in my AR (and also my other .22's) so therefore it was legal to own and buy, and that I had bought .22 ammo countless times from that very same store. My logic is that if you don't know the laws governing the ammo that you sell and you fear liability for wrongdoing, maybe you should actually know the relevant laws to begin with!! I mean there are pistols made in .223 as well, yet I walked out of there with a box of that with no issues. Annoying

Needless to say it was a frustrating situation that I have never encountered in my years as a gun owner. Walmart needs to hire employees that actually know the laws governing what they are selling! Has anyone else had this situation happen to them?

Point at the caliber written on the box of ammo and say out loud ".22 long RIFLE... What's the issue?"

My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

It's Walmart...and you were expecting to have an intelligent discussion about CA ammunition laws with someone that speaks English?

Expectations are the bitter seeds of resentment.

Walmart employees aren't trusted to make these kinds of decisions, they do what the computer tells them as if the computer is the one running the show.

Try going on the morning shift when the manager is there.

^This^ You have to explain it in Stupid. It's the only language they speak.

You can't expect that business to hire competent people. It's not going to attract the cream of the crop. You can always go to a gun store where the employees are expected to have such knowledge, but you'll most likely pay more. Its a pain in the *** but what can we do besides complain and watch nothing get done about it.

I go out of my way to buy ammo from a specific Wal Mart, just because the employees at that specific location know what they are doing.

Sorry to hear but most employees will cover their butts when they don't know any better.

i went to my local walmart last week, and the sign that says "you must be 18 to buy long gun ammo" was scratched out and "21" was written in, this was changed in the last month or so since the last time i bought ammo.

maybe print this out and show them next time they say its a federal law saying they cant sell you rifle ammo....

Straight from the ATF faq site:

Q: Does a customer have to be a certain age to buy firearms or ammunition from a licensee?

Yes. Under the GCA, long guns and long gun ammunition may be sold only to persons 18 years of age or older. Sales of handguns and ammunition for handguns are limited to persons 21 years of age and older. Although some State and local ordinances have lower age requirements, dealers are bound by the minimum age requirements established by the GCA. If State law or local ordinances establish a higher minimum age, the dealer must observe the higher age requirement.

I picked up a couple hundred 12ga yesterday and some clays, while waiting to pay, there was an older guy there spewing some grade A FUD to the clerk and another guy wanting ammo. I kept my mouth shut until the FUD spewer left, when the other guy asked if any of that was truth, after which the clerk asked me what kind of gun shoots .410.. Wallyworld.. always an experience

It's Walmart dude. You have a better chance of educating a gorilla as to the ammo laws.

Walmart is where logic goes to die and stupidity is king. I hate Walmart with a passion for this exact reason.

You should have told then by not selling you the ammo they are in violation of the second amendment. You'll give them one more chance then you'll call the constitution police, file a report and have them prosecuted for a civil rights violation.... They would have believed it.
