    Holstered Gun at the Range

i go to 'Oaktreegunclub' and 'Place to Shoot', and they dont allow holstered handguns. WTF is up with that??? is it a safety issue or something? even if it is, a stupid person can still hurt someone even if they grab a loaded gun off a table..

Because its in their Range's SOP Standard Operating Procedure that is approved by their insurance.

Their range their rules. And if they want to stay in business they will have an SOP that protects them.

I would think most public ranges in the area do not allow holstered guns for the general public

A lot of ranges do not allow holstered guns for safety reasons. I'd say the majority of ranges I've been to do not allow holstered guns.

And yes, stupid people can cause a lot of safety issues. It is much easier to see that guns are clear and safe if they are on a table and people are not handling them. A lodged gun shouldn't be sitting on a table unattended where someone can just walk up and grab it.

There is only 1 range in our area that you can practice from the holster.

                This is exactly why..

Too many tactical idiots doing stuff they don't know how to properly do. It's a liability issue they would just rather avoid. Trust me it's a GREAT idea.. Just look at your roof next time you go to the range. Then just imagine if they allowed bolster draws...

If you don't practice drawing from the holster how do you expect to do if the time comes. My family & I practice every other weekend at a minimum & attend Front Sight at least twice a year.

I've NEVER been to a range that allows holstered handguns. When I want to practice drawing from a holster, I do it at home with snap caps or on BLM/NF land.

You can practice drawing from your holster all the time.

At home, with an empty chamber.

Rest assured your arm muscles and cover garment don't behave differently just because you gun does or does not have a round in the pipe. I practice drawing from concealment with an empty chamber , and the mechanics are no different. When the the dung hit the ionizer for me I had no issue drawing from concealment even though ive not done it frequently with a hot chamber.

Now that we have addressed the tactical aspect, let me be clear about this:THERE IS NO NEED TO PRACTICE LIVE FIRE HOLSTER DRAW AT A STATIC RANGE.

Unless its supervised and conducted under truly expert conditions, no one at a public range has any business demonstrating holster draws with live fire. Even if someone is expert enough to do it safely, all it takes is one range commando seeing it to think "gee whiz, that's no too hard. Ill just practice-BOOM!"

Enter lots of blood , 911 call, police report & a closed range. At 11 o'clock that night.....

"On this evenings report on Channel 7 news, a gun went off today at Bud's Shooting Range and Sports. 1 man was taken to the hospital for injuries to the groin. Local mayor James Hoplohobe was too busy for comment, but his spokeperson questioned the need for a firing range in his peaceful community".

Maybe we need some yellow safety labels on all fire arms. Kind of like ladders right? You never know when some stupid homeowner might try to paint his own house and fall off a ladder! Then what? No paint for anyone!

This mentality is the problem IMHO.

Yup, all our public ranges don't let holstering, only one is a police range which isn't so public..

Me two. It scares me to think that this question was asked by a shooter.

If you don't mind traveling, you go could to Raahagues for a bit. I guess you could call it a public range with private range privileges. I normally shoot on weekdays so crowding is never a problem. You get your own bay for pistol & rifle shooting at close distances so you can practice shooting out of your holster all you want(in the alloted time). You could also join a private range like West End Gun Club for example and they have their own private bays as well. There's always BLM land as well. Oh, and if those two local ranges you mentioned have IDPA/IPSC shooting events, your good to go there.
