The point of these buy backs in my opinion is to convince poor people into giving up there guns.

I find it interesting how many can say guns are "evil" and guns kill people but it's admitted that a gun buyback has little impact on violent crime and is not the root cause of crime.

Police collect more than 1,000 weapons

Soon after Oakland streets again exploded in violence, police collected more than 1,000 handguns and assault weapons Saturday in three no-questions-asked buyback events.

State Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, who was carjacked at gunpoint Dec. 29 in North Oakland, was the first to surrender a gun. He gave police the handgun he bought 15 years ago after receiving death threats during his fight to ban assault weapons.

"There's too many damn guns in our society, and they're too easy to get," he said at the buyback event at Allen Temple in East Oakland. "The fact is, if I had reached for that gun when I was being carjacked, I'd be dead right now. There's too many people out there with nothing to lose."

Oakland police paid $250 for every gun that was surrendered. Organizers collected more than three times the number of guns they expected and planned to give them to the Crucible, an Oakland industrial arts studio, to be melted down and sculpted into a peace monument.

The buybacks came on the heels of an especially bloody stretch in Oakland, in which three people were killed and several injured in five shootings in roughly 16 hours. Violent crime is slightly higher than it was a year ago, Oakland Police Chief Wayne Tucker said Saturday.

Gun buybacks don't seem to have much impact on crime rates, but fewer guns on the street is undeniably a good thing, Tucker said.

"Guns do kill people," he said. "So we're happy to get as many guns out of Oakland as we can."

For Gloria Garner, who lives down the block from Allen Temple, the gun buyback was a welcome sight.

"They need to turn them all in," she said. "I know they just turn the guns in because they want the money, but we have too many killings in Oakland, California. We need to get rid of all the guns."

Noel Deleon of San Lorenzo brought three handguns to the buyback event. He had planned to sell them on eBay, but didn't want them to end up in the hands of criminals.

"I just don't need them anymore," he said. "It's a relief to get rid of them."

The Rev. J. Alfred Smith Sr. of Allen Temple said he supports gun buybacks, but would like to see more attention paid to what he calls the root causes of violence: unemployment, poor schools and depressed neighborhoods.

"If we can keep one gun off the street, that's good, but I don't know if this solves the real problem," he said. "So it's both good and bad, but that's life."

Cali-gula, I'll give you the ten bucks for that old mossberg .22. Refinished and re-crowned it might be a good starter rifle for a guy who can't afford a firearm (lotts of good guys would love a plinking gun who are too hard up to buy a new ruger)

Seriously guys, you don't win by playing the other guys game. You win by making him play your game.

If you have a gun that is broken or needs work, you should either sell it to someone who needs parts for the gun they have, or you should make it functional.

It would absolutly sicken me to turn in even a beat up junker jennings that was missing parts. there are people who may NEED a cheap gun for the house because they can't afford anything better.

Every gun you give to someone who doesn't have one is one more 2A advocate that you've converted for life.

If you are thinking of participating in this stuff.. please don't... PM me and I'll either try to find a buyer for it or I'll buy it myself, fix it up and pass it on. (I can't offer $250 a gun, but as I'm sure you now realise they weren't going to give that much to you anyway)

Would it have been legal for me to go up and down the line of cars to see if any had collectible C&R rifles and for me to buy them for $300 on the spot (say an M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, FN-49, Hakim or G43 or even SKS) with my 03 FFL? It might take some brass balls but if it's legal, you never know what you might find. I suppose they could kick me off private property once I was at the church but if I'm on the street it would seem be okay.

Perata's gun was a revolver, yes?
Other people with revolvers were turned away.

Did he get $250? Others were paid $50.

It was taxpayer money?

I suspect that the fire will burn in this thread for along time, i wish the police chief or spokes person, or any police would get involved with this debate and give us there opinion on this crazy disception they have set in place buy having this buyback, do they realy believe this to work,

It is a terrible solution or idea of one, to stop crime. and there saying they are just glad more guns are of the street, come, on are they even thinking about there choice of words, - sounds like they are chuckeling behind there breath, would bet my last dollar - no my own mother that these guns have never even been on the street, let alone down some punks pants. I would love to debate this with them and im just the genneral public not an expert on crime, but i tell you all this, you dont need to be an expert to see that this is a farse.
That said, i in know way want anyone to think im bashing police, i know they have a difficult job, its just that there wasting time and money for a house of cards concept. could be best used in over ways, hmm try by going to the source instead of hoping they come to you, they know were these gangs are they have thousands of profiles or potential criminals that they could approach in a healthy way and offer them more money with incentives, that way the guns that are on the street - the real street, could be bought and a liason/repore could be made this way you dont alienate yourself from the comunity that best need looking at. Or is this just to much effort.

After they refused payment for my revolvers at the Isabella Street location, I called KGO and emailed every news outlet I could think of. This included Limbaugh, O'Rielly and Hannity and Colmes.

Katie Lieber at KGO called me back this morning and did a 5 minute phone interview with me.

She was shocked that Perata would do this and she said it now sounds like this is nothing more than polical grandstanding.

I was selling them some old cap and ball revolvers with frozen nipples and bad timing. My plan was to use their money to build an AR, and send pics back to them with a big thank you.

I was just using their system to show the hypocrisy of the whole event.

Wait for the whole story before you accuse someone of selling their soul.
