    CMMG 22 Evolution Safety

Hi all, I am writing this thread out of a safety concern that just happened to me with the 22 Evolution from CMMG.

I just purchased a .22 Evolution kit from "OC Armory" in Laguna Hills, California. I went home and opened the packaging for the kit. Included was a 22 Evolution conversion BCG, and a 10 round magazine. I removed the 5.56 BCG in my AR15 after removing the magazine and safety checking the weapon. The chamber and barrel were completely clear. before I dropped in the 22 Evolution kit, I took the rubber cap that protects the 5.56 round shaped conversion chamber that houses the firing pin. I dropped in the Evolution 22 conversion, and locked my takedown pin back into place. I then racked my charging handle to see the action of the kit and how it would function. To my extreme surprise, a LIVE round of .22lr ammo dropped out!!!! I did not put the magazine in the weapon and it was unloaded off to the side. The round was a .22lr with an "F" stamped on the bottom, presumably from Federal ammunition. I utilize remington and CCI ammo, and there was none of that in the vicinity, and what I did have was still in box with the seal open. I immediately called OC armory and described the issue, but they denied the feasibility and any wrongdoing on their part. Luckily I followed all of the safety rules so I didn't have a negligent discharge in a presumably safe rifle. Either way, I just wanted to post this as a remember to all that a gun should always be treated as loaded, and I have to ask, WTF happened that a live round was in the kit!? Has anyone ever had this happen? I do not know if it is the fault of CMMG or OC Armory, but somewhere along the line someone dropped a live round in there and it sure wasn't me.

probably someone doing a function check with something besides a snap cap.
My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

Thanks, I figured so, but wasn't sure. Probably negligence by OC Armory then...i guess be careful if you buy a conversion kit from there!

I just recieved this back from CMMG customer service/tech support. Very quick response.

"Yes we test fire the conversions as the final step in product inspection. We use Federal Value Pack 36gr ammo as it is the most consistent and reliable that we have found. I am disappointed and perplexed to hear about what you have found. The conversion should have been checked by the test firer after shooting and the shipping department before putting the protective cap on. I will see that there are more protective measures taken, thank you for bringing this to our attention. This has never happened before."

Wow I've never heard of such a thing. I sell those things & that makes me kind of nervous. I've pulled items before out of safety concerns & this is the most negligent snafu I've ever heard. I guess that gives new meaning to the phrase there is no such thing as a unloaded gun. I'm glad to know that no one was injured.

Just FYI good luck with that remington...

Only thing my CMMG runs is CCI mostly and flawless with federal..

Blazer/Remington doesnt shoot more than 5 with out a FTF/FTE. Gun shot full auto a few times after 300 rounds of that stuff due to the dirty powder it left behind.. Called CMMG told me to clean it out the "barrel" part of it with a drill and cleaning brush and stopped the full auto.

Yeah I took it to the range to test it today.

Ran CCI Stinger (1640 FPS) and it ran golden

Put some CCI Quiet sub-sonics through, just because. Pretty damn quiet, but of course didn't cycle the gun.

Remington Golden Bullet- worked well for the first 8 rounds, then the last 2 consistantly malfunctioned/wouldnt feed. Might be a mag issue though, not sure.

Yea I'm going to say its the kit. I only use black dog mags but they are top **** and feed everything fine.

And CMMG only reccomends certain brands to be used through the kits for that reason.. And it's a known problem with the Remington stuff not to run through the CMMG kit..

Just like win hosted bulk 12g hates running in 870s and 500s. Ammo just doesn't mix for some reason.

I've wondered if manufacturers test fired uppers like they do pistols because my CMMG 22lr upper didn't come with a spent case. Sounds like someone at CMMG was asleep at the wheel.
