About a month ago my neighbor called and asked me to fire off a few rounds to scare off some coyotes, for about 3 nights they were closer than usual, like a couple hundred feet from the house and 2 different packs of 4 or 5. Her horses were freaking out.

I also have a nice back stop and when I work up some new loads or get a new gun I can take a few steps out the door and fire away. I also have a screen taken off a couple windows for when a critter or 2 needs to be taken.

I am not as far out as CSA or some others but far enough.

Good for you! It's best they know what they are getting. Sucks to have someone new move into the neighborhood and then expect you to change your behavior. Shoot a canon off!

I hear gunshots outside occasionally (sometimes full-auto).... and I'm within the city limits.

FYI from a real estate perspective I'm not sure I would be posting that you intentionally discharged a firearm in order to discourage the purchase of real property. Ianal but many sellers could feel you have caused them harm and would want to seek damages. If I was the seller and got wind I would be in touch with my attorney.

It's one thing to shoot legally on your property and another to "steer" people away from real property ownership. Can't wait til I close on my little patch of desert shooting range!

Not a real estate lawyer either, but what would be the damages? They were discouraged from buying land they would have regretted buying when they later found out that CSA shoots on his property? Seems like he helped them avoid harm to their interests, if their interests are to acquire land with no neighbors who shoot frequently.

Not worried about the buyer as much. If you were selling your home and your neighbor took an action to discourage buyers to buy they would reduce demand for your property. You are then forced to sell for less money. You have now realized a loss due to the action of another.

In addition, steering in real estate is a major offense. This is usually an offense by a real estate agent, and again ianal but I think two people colluding to discriminate against a third party is a no no.

What the hell do I know though, haha! Just laying out some arguments and trying to help our brothers not get in trouble.

                    Neighbors

CSA did them a favor (and probably himself too) by exercising his right to shoot on his own property. Had they not realized he had a legal right to shoot and he exercised that right regularly, they may have purchased the property and then been upset when they found out.

First Story:My BIL purchased 5 acres a few miles outside the city limits. He then built a house and a dirt bike track for himself and my nephews to practice. No issues for 7 years, until someone new moves into the nearest house, 1/4 mile away. You guessed it, they started *****ing about the 4 hours per week that they rode (noise only-the track was watered) They go to the County Board of Supervisors, who limit the riding to SCHEDULED days (which were adhered to) 6 months later they have to go back for review and get shut down to 1 day per week. Moral: He should have ridden every day the house was being shown, so prospective buyers knew what to expect.

Second story: A new guy moves into my neighborhood, which is also 1/2 mile from a race track that has been in operation since WWII. The first summer he is there, he goes door to door in the neighborhood, wanting signatures for a petition to shut the track down! I told him no thanks-the track was here way before this neighborhood was built! He should have done more homework ( he did not stay long) Cheers

                      OK, I'm officially jealous.

I grew up in such an environment back east. I miss such a life. That, and riding dirt bikes on our land any time, day or night. Going fishing for blue-gill or sun-fish on a whim.... on a lake within walking distance.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

Yes I get it. Buyer beware. Sellers are required to disclose any material fact or defect that could affect the desirability of the property. Things like legal shooting, dirt bike riding and race tracks. I recently listed and sold a home within earshot of a police firing range in a heavily populated neighborhood of Long Beach. The buyer was made aware multiple times in writing and was happy to pay a lower price for a home in a great school district.

If you read my post i gave an example on the seller side. I certainly am not insinuating that the op should refrain from exercising their free will on their property. In fact I support it whole heartedly!

                          +1000 ^^^

My story...When the wife and I were looking for some property out in the sticks, the guy across the road from where we were looking comes over, introduces himself and we get to talkin. He asks why in the he** would we want to move waaaaay out there and the wife mentioned peace and quiet among other things. He just laughed, and says ya'll won't be getting any of that here and points to the 100 yard range he has set up in his front yard. I just looked at my wife, and then back at him with a s*** eatin grin and told him that's exactly the kind of peace and quiet we're looking for. Needless to say, that sealed the deal.

                            The premise is silly.

If I was looking to buy the place, and the neighbor was outside shooting

I'd think, great, he won't mind when I go outside shooting

That's what happened when we bought this place. I noticed spent brass and shotgun shells in the yard.

When I met the two neighbors I mentioned that and asked if people shot around here.

They both said. Yeah, there's shooting and hunting around here. I asked if anyone called the Sheriff when that happened? They both responded. Nope.

However when city folks go rural they tend to react in a city way to gunshots. ie a tizzy and call the Sheriffs. It's better they buyer knows before they buy what's going on.

For us shooting on the property is a plus for others it's not.
