Yosemite and Handguns

I will be going there this weekend, not staying over night but have thought about taking a handgun with me locked up in a case in my backpack.

I don't have a CCW so that's my only option. Going on a long hike and the reason i would be thinking of taking it is purely because its legal to do so and i wanted to exercise that right.

Anyone else done this.
Do the park entrance ranges ask you if you have any firearms with you at the entrance.

What are your thoughts on taking a firearm with you to the park.

Interesting, I would also like to know the answer to this question cuz I to am going to Yosemite this weekend, but ill be staying 1-2 nights there. (Don't worry we got a trailer. Not staying in cabins.)

The Arizona Health Department is on alert after the Hanta virus killed two people in California.

Doctors in Arizona said there is a case of the potentially deadly virus nearly every year.

On Thursday, Yosemite National Park rangers closed the cabins where the two people who died of the virus had stayed.

Investigators said the double-walled cabins made it easy for mice, which carry the virus, to nest between the walls.

A total of six people have been sickened by the virus.

Wondering the same thing. Website says it's legal to carry (open, locked ?? - no detail on the site, they refer you to CA DOJ) a handgun in the park, but they also state it is illegal to discharge a firearm in the park.

So, I'm guessing if you had to defend yourself in a life threatening situation (zombie face eater high on bath salts or momma bear protecting a cub) by firing your gun, you'd be charged knowing CA.

Short story is that AB144 has banned UOC in the NPs in California. You can possess them but they must be locked up anywhere but your campsite.

I was in Yosemite last Saturday and Sunday, and feel fine, thanks for asking.

Mechanically, we drove in the family sedan. There's a ranger manned (or in our case womanned) gate, she was polite and cheerful, and basically told us it was $20 for the day, but that cost covers a full week of in and out. NO QUESTIONS of any kind, didn't ask if we were staying overnight, or anything.

Remember, there are lots of campgrounds and the Awahnee hotel INSIDE the park, and it's legal to have a firearm for protection inside a motel room, AND that means there is a lot of traffic in and out.

No issues re anyone asking us and that's probably why.

Note that LOC (Loaded Open Carry) is legal IN YOUR CAMPSITE.

I have heard that they make LEO officers unload their firearms prior to going into the park, so I'd check my facts or call the Rangers Office prior to your visit.

If you are visiting Yosemite today, you should be a lot more worried about an accident (traffic, fall while hiking, drowning, etc.) than the Hantavirus.

The cabins and tent cabins are closed and besides, the numbers themselves show that more die in Yosemite from other causes...

There were 9 total deaths in 2008, 14 in 2009 and 15 in 2010 and there where at least 18 in 2011.

But, Hantavirus is in the news right now so I get it. Just saying you need to worry about a slip and fall or car accident more than a mouse dropping.

There are SO many people in Yosemite these days. It will be like taking a handgun to the mall. (i.e. really no need) not much "nature" left in that national park

OP: you can't open carry anymore due to ab144 unless you're in your campsite.
You're only option is luccing everywhere else.

Just got back from my Day trip, hiked to the top of Nevada falls, legs are killing me. left the unloaded P226 in a locked container under the car seat ( SUV ) My wife was very happy to have it along for the drive in case something happened to and from Yosemite.
