Membership in the NRA is a pain in the butt. Membership in anything is a pain in the butt. Being a Republican is a REAL pain in the butt right now. Getting oceans of shiny wood pulp propaganda in my mailbox is a real thrill for the wife. She thinks I'm a nazi.

However...

The NRA advocates nationwide for something I think is important. It's not a fringe organization. It's promotional methods are burdensome, frustrating and they work. Like any group institution they have benefits available, and they are visible. Just like politicians.

I don't care for many of the players. They seem too strident and radical -- it always seems they advocate all or nothing. Unfortunately, this is a republic and that's the way business is done: compromise between extremes. It's annoying, but the NRA is playing the game just right.

I was going to stop all the promotional garbage. But on second thought it's actually easier to just ignore it and every once in a while be surprised by something interesting in the mail.

Anyway, just my take on it...

Looks like a pretty good investment to me, aside from politics.

NRA has a staff of 800 that needs a reasonable place to work in, and Fairfax, VA ain't far from Wash. DC. If you're fighting in DC, you gotta walk the walk and part of that is having look of success - or you don't get too far. (Would you go to a sales job interview in a beat-up unwashed car and wearing broken-down unshined shoes? Hell no.)

The Bradys have some kinda walk-up office. I'm glad that the contrast is noticed. That gives us some 'big swingin' dick' credibility in eyes of legislators, staffers and bureaucrats - which is why we've been doing well on the Federal level.

What was that something?

Using their website to send out emails to the politicians that wasn't 100% gun related. I am the reason there are the big warning things on that page now, where they weren't before. I sent an email about various gun stuff and slipped in something about how our tax money is being wasted in jails by paying for DirecTV for them (which it is, and they are by the way, my emails were responded to) and whoever at the NRA who runs the website wrote me back telling me they were going to sue me for $1200 for every email sent out. Luckily they never followed through but that put a very sour taste in my mouth. An organization that I fully believed in turned on me in my opinion so now I could care less. F them. I will support organizations that actually believe in what I believe in and don't try to sue me for using tools they give me and tell me to use. I'm certainly not going to be sending them any money other than my dues. I even took their stickers off my cars and truck.

These various people get an Email routed from the official NRA website, but only read your personal rantings about how easy prisoners have it.

Both of you are off base. The message I sent using their tools was 99% firearms related and personalized by me. It had nothing of the NRA on it, only my information. It was basically the same as an anonymous emailer. I was not "using their personal email" as their system doesn't work that way, or at least didn't back then (~1999-2000) I was expressing my disapproval of whatever firearms law was up for vote at the time and at the end of my note I added a line something to the effect of "and what is this I hear about directv being installed in prisons? Is this true? My tax money is being spent so prisoners can enjoy satellite TV?" I was just "doing my part" and was threatened with lawsuits by these guys. It makes no sense to me to use their system to send out the gun stuff and then use something else to send individual messages to each official for a different topic when I can just tack it on and kill a few birds with the same stone. Now, if I were using their system to send only non-gun related messages then I would agree with you. However, that wasn't the case this time.

As much as I disliked my membership in the NRA previously with the media blitz on shootings that's going on I think I might re-join.
