    2008 SHOT Show report

Well, here's a SHOT Show report from my perspective. I didn't really seek out specific firearms. I know a lot of people on this board have been clamoring for information regarding the new stuff from FNH, Sig Sauer, and S&W (especially the rifle stuff), but I didn't really analyze any of it. So you'll be disappointed with my write-up if that's your primary interest.

    Direct link to write-up: http://www.ocabj.net/?p=87

I was able to walk through the exhibition floor during the first two days of the 2008 SHOT Show. The size of the exhibition space was incredible, with SHOT claiming 715,000 square feet of total exhibition space. At a brisk pace, it takes a full day (0830 to 1700) to get through just the Central Hall exhibition area.

There are just too many new products combined from all the firearms and shooting related manufacturers to even discuss in a simple post-show writeup (the SHOT Show organizers published actual booklets containing the new product announcements). So rather than rehash every single new product, I'll just mention the notable items that I found interesting.

    1. I stumbled upon the Lapua booth in the back of the Central Hall on day 2. They had a small booth and it didn't seem like many people were stopping by to visit, which surprised me considering the significance of Lapua in the shooting sports. Anyway, Lapua made significant additions/changes to their rimfire ammunition line, introducing six new lines: X-ACT, Midas+, Center-X, Pistol King, Pistol OSP, Polar Biathlon. The Lapua representatives noted that these are brand new developments and a few will replace current production ammo (which will be phased out). Along with the new rimfire ammunition lines is new product packaging which is a nice sleek and modern appearance.

But I was most interested in Lapua's introduction of a new 22 caliber 77gr BTHP that they will now be producing under their Scenar product line. Their product sheet indicates that their .224" 77gr BTHP Scenar will have a ballistic coefficient of .402 and is capable of being seated at magazine length in the AR-15. This is impressive considering the Sierra 77gr MK has a BC of around .370 and .340 for the Nosler 77gr Custom Competition.

    2. Ruger has released several new products. One that caught my eye is the new Charger pistol, which is a Ruger 10/22 action put into a laminate pistol stock. Since it is a 10/22 action, the Charger accepts the standard 10/22 rotary 10-round magazine. While the application would seem limited, it seems like a nice lightweight varmint pistol and serves as a nice compliment to the 10/22 rifle. Ruger will be selling the Charger with an adjustable bipod and Weaver-style scope mount.

    3. I made it a priority to stop by the LRB Arms booth since a friend had asked me to get some product information from them. I inquired LRB representatives about their back log and it was indicated that they are caught up on their orders and there should not be much of a lag time to fill a standard catalog item order. Important to note is that LRB Arms has started producing their own forged gas cylinders. Since quality M14 parts are becoming scarce, LRB Arms is looking into producing their own parts. But it was indicated that the scale at which LRB will manufacture parts is dependent on other parts manufacturers. There are a few established parts manufacturers that are looking to make M14 parts and if those parts are of good quality, LRB Arms will most likely not produce those parts on their own.

    4. I stopped by the Brownells/Sinclair booth to inquire about any further changes to the Brownells / Sinclair catalogs (combining product lines, etc.) and it appears that things will remain as they are for the foreseeable future. I ended up talking to Brownells' E-Commerce Manager, Clayton Whipple, who told me that the Brownells website will be updated in the next few months with improved search functionality and better product imagery. He noted that one of the primary complaints has been the ability to search for and find products on the Brownells website and that improving the search function has been one of the primary goals for the website overhaul.

    5. Leupold is making a push into the flashlight market with their new MX modular flashlight line. While I am a Surefire fan, the Leupold MX lights are very impressive. The Leupold MX is meant for users to build the light to their needs using either a two or three cell 'maintube' (body) with one of four bezels (lamps) which determine the available mode(s), brightness, and beam focus. The majority of the components are made in Oregon and the lights are also assembled in Oregon.

    5. Burris Optics is making great strides in their Xtreme Tactical Riflescope (XTR) line. Burris has introduced a new intermediate optic designed for AR-15 style rifles with a 1-4x power magnification and a Burris proprietary reticle dubbed the XTR Ballistic 5.56 Reticle. The reticle has windage hashmarks with 1 mil (mildot) spacing. When zeroed for 100 yards, the reticle has dots and hashmarks for 100 yard increments of drop all the way to 1000 yards. Combined with the XTR rings and the Burris FastFire reflex sight, this gives the M16/AR-15 operator a very versatile optical sighting solution.

These are just a few of the notable items I found at this year's SHOT Show. There are many more things to note, but these ones definitely caught my attention.

I'll try to post more notable items in a later report after I sort through and process the photos I took.

      Ocabj,
Thanks for sharing. The Lapua ammo looks promising. At least now we have other top choices besides BHs. Also, may need to pick up a Burris scope for my carbine 6.8.

        2008 SHOT Show Report continued

        2008 SHOT Show Report continued:

Here are a few more topics of note that I observed at this year's SHOT Show.

        1. Bushmaster is working with Iron Brigade Armory to produce "Custom Shop" rifles under the Bushmaster brand name. This includes a couple accurized AR-15 rifles and a bolt rifle built on a Remington 700 action. The bolt rifle is dubbed the Bushmaster Custom Sniper Rifle (BCSR). It is your 'typical' accurized Remington 700 action in .308 Winchester. The BCSR is configured with a 20" 1:12" stainless steel barrel with a SureFire muzzle brake (suppressor adapter), custom tuned match trigger, BCS 1000 stock, tactical bolt knob, and heavy duty recoil lug. Bushmaster guarantees sub-MOA out to 600 yards and provides a limited lifetime warranty. The rifle includes a scope base and rings that are built to Bushmaster specifications. Bushmaster included a scope mounting system that meets their specifications, because they have found that the single point of failure for many precision bolt rifle platforms is the optics mounting system.

        2. Aimpoint has a new product known as the Corner Engagement Unit (CEU). It is an add-on that fits on on a standard 1913 picatinny rail (such as on a flat top AR-15 upper) and goes behind the existing Aimpoint optic. The CEU allows for the operator to position the weapon platform around a corner and viewing what the muzzle end is pointed at through the CEU. The CEU angled body can be rotated to allow for varying positions as necessary (viewing around left or right corners and above or below obstacles or walls). The CEU is compatible with night vision devices. This specific item is currently in limited production for military deployment. Civilian market availability of the Aimpoint CEU is unknown.

        3. Remington's venture into the AR-15 rifle world could be viewed as moot by many considering the fact that there are already several well established manufacturers more specialized in the AR-15 platform (such as Bushmaster and Rock River Arms). But Remington's position in the market does make sense because the company is more angled towards hunters. Creating an AR-15 product line helps to legitimize the AR-15 as a hunting rifle given the strength of the Remington brand name. This is a much needed effort considering the impact of Jim Zumbo's statements that AR-15 rifles are "terrorist rifles [and] have no place in hunting."

        4. Bushnell Outdoor Products is becoming a huge company in terms of their product lines. Most are familiar with Bushnell's extensive line of optics (riflescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes, range finders) and GPS units. But very few known the parent company of Bushnell also controls the Uncle Mike's, M-Pro 7, Hoppes, Gunmate, Butler Creek, and Stoney Point brands as well. Bushnell's new addition to their optics line is the new Elite 6500 rifle scope series. The Elite 6500 series scopes will use 30mm bodies with push/pull turret designs. The first run of Elite 6500 scopes will be in the form of three base models: 2.5-16x42mm, 2.5-16x50mm and 4.5-30x50mm. Each model has side parallax adjustment and will be available in either the Multi-X or mildot reticle.

        5. The Hodgdon Powder company is releasing a new powder dubbed the Hybrid 100V. It is supposed to be a spherical powder with an extruded shape, hence the 'Hybrid' name. According to a Hodgdon representative at SHOT Show, Hybrid 100V should have a burn rate similar to Hodgdon 4350. It will be sold in 1-lb and 8-lb containers and should be available in Spring 2008. It is worthy to note that at this time, Hodgdon is a major importer of smokeless powders. All Hodgdon brand spherical and black powder comes from a Stateside plant. IMR Powders are imported from Canada and Hodgdon brand extruded powders are imported from Australia. Also, Hodgdon is officially an importer/distributor for Vihtavuori powders. Speaking with a Hodgdon representative, this arrangement with Vihtavuori was made because of Vihtavuori's difficulties in getting powder supplies into the United States. Hodgdon has an effective infrastructure and system for importing powders from foreign sources.

"Bushmaster guarantees sub-MOA out to 600 yards" as in 6" pie size group as to 1" circle at 600yrds if I read that correctly? Regardless, pretty impressive

Yes, that definitely caught my eye. I wonder how many false positives Bushmaster will get as far as people claiming their rifle won't hold sub-MOA at 600 yards when it's operator error (can't hold correctly, can't call wind, bad trigger break, bad ammo, etc).

Day 1 was rough for me. I was carrying way too much crap by midday. While I didn't care too much for a lot of the catalogs, I know the guys at the club/clubhouse would want the product info, so I was being a packrat.

Thank God they had all those complimentary tote bags in the concourse as well as at the vendors.

By midday of Saturday, I also had a headache because I was hungry and got thirsty, but just kept going through the show exhibition floor. I finally stopped at 1300, grabbed a slice of pizza and took a break in the Press Room. I ended up getting enough energy to continue on for another hour before I called it quits for the day.

The next SHOT Show I go to I'll have one of those wheeled file/document crates and either a better camera bag for easier/faster lens switching or wear a vest with a lot of pockets to hold my lenses.

I drove out there this morning from So Cal and got there at opening. A couple things that got my attention is the STG44 .22 rifle in the case. I want one. The MP5 .22 (GSG) is awesome. I am going to pick one of those up. I thought the KELTEC bull pup was pretty interesting. KEL-TEC also has a new pistol grip and buttstock assembly for the SU16 rifles. Not my cup o tea but interesting. Lots of Ak's of various manufacture......the DSA booth was dripping with sexiness. Walked the show in 4 hours, made a stop at a secret location and drove home. 12 hours on the button from start to finish. Oh yeah..the SIG556 is a pretty sweet rifle too...maybe Ill pick one of those up as well. Why not.

The DSA booth might have been dripping with sexiness? But did you actually try to talk to them? They basically brushed me off and lied to me on every question I had, so I'm not going to be giving them any business.

I did not try to talk with them. I was slobbering over the FAL's and trying to use my piercing green eyes to charm the silk panties off of some hotties. And by charming the panties off of some hotties I really mean eating the cornmeal coating of my corndog before eating the tasty meat wiener. I live in a strange bubble.

man, you must have gone at a different time than I did. All I saw there were the rifles and some dudes.

Glock, on the other hand, had some hotties there. And the Code Red booth out in the tent had a girl that I wanted to take home
