I haven't figured out how, when the target is about 4' above ground level, the pvc pipes on the ground are getting hit in addition to the pvc risers that hold the target.

They are easy to make, just messy when using a skill saw to cut the 10' section into the individual pieces. Just have a shop vac handy.

I followed the instructions from the blog
One of the easiest ways to build a portable target stand is to use PVC pipe and connectors. Utah .308 Shooter Cheese has created a simple yet sturdy target frame, and he's shared his design so you can build a similar frame easily and at low cost.

cost 15-16$ in supplies not including the pvc cement and the broken belt sander belt from sanding the wood down to shape to fit in the 1 1/2" pvc

the 10ft white pvc was cheaper than the black abs @ home depot however the 1 1/2" abs tees and 90 deg bends were cheaper than the pvc variety. to build it to his specs you need around 15ft of pvc.

sweet setup! what is the distance between the two upright pieces that hold the wooden stakes up? will an IPSC target fit?
            thanks.

Not as nice and those metal frames....

just some scrap 2x4, 2x6 and plywood. The uprights slip into the 2x6 base so they break down for transport.

or you can go the really cheap route around election time

Here's my cheap PVC target stand. Not counting the cost of the paper plate target, string, clothes pin, and 6 screws comes to $4.79 before sales tax. The PVC was all ready cut lengths of 3/4 schedule 40 at Orchard Supply Hardware. So didn't even need to cut them.

                    3ea 48" $2.88
                    2ea 24" $0.96
                    1 tee $.39
                    2 elbows $.56

Instead of PVC glue, I used 1" screws. 1" only go in one side and not out the other, so no sharp screw points the scratch things. With screws, its easy to replace a piece that gets shot up and not need to redo everything. After all, I'm not trying to make the PVC watertight.

The string just wraps around the screw heads at the top of the uprights. And I drilled a couple more holes in case the top gets shot off.

It doesn't get windy where I shoot, but if it does, a sand bag or junk laying around out there should hold it down.
