2x4 scraps cut to 18" nailed or screwed into a H with a doube board across the middle with just enough room to jam a firring strip.
Two strips per stand, a staplegun, and some cardboard backers; setup time is 30 secs per target.

What kind of targets are you using? If you're just using paper targets, I bought some of the "Compact Target" stands at my local shop for $10 ea.

Unless you are a really bad shot, you shouldn't harm any of the target pieces, except for the cardboard silhouette.

Ha! I can't believe how many stands are destroyed at my club!
While a responsible shooter would have no problem with this pvc design, it won't last long otherwise.
Some people don't have a clue that time and effort are involved in making stands.

Drill some holes through it and buy some stakes to stake into the ground.

I used to have a bookmark for a really neat PVC target stand. Good thing about that is it can be disassembled and adjusted as needed, and PVC is cheap.

Anyone know what I'm talking about? I don't have the bookmark anymore.

Lytle Creek also has hard ground and lots of rocks. I usually use my sledge hammer to make a hole in the ground, then lightly pound the the furring strips with the target attached and hope for the best. There are usually enough large rocks to put in front and back of the firring strips to support it, unless it gets too windy.

I think I will make the wood one posted first. Maybe after making a couple of those, I will finally get around to the one someone on my xd site suggested over a year ago for bowling pins.

Basically a A frame on both sides with a 2x4 at the top and bottom. The top one has either a cable or rope attached to it. The bottom of the cable/rope is attached to an eye hook and screwed into the top of the pins. If you nail or screw it together, it will probably be a bit cumbersome. I would guess bolts with a butterfly nut would probably make it easier to take apart/assemble and place in car. Since I'm as mechanically competent as I'm computer illiterate; I surmise I'll be a bit more than 10-15 minutes on the first targets and much longer on the bowling pin ones. Wish me luck.

One of the easiest ways to build a portable target stand is to use PVC pipe and connectors. Utah .308 Shooter Cheese has created a simple yet sturdy target frame, and he's shared his design so you can build a similar frame easily and at low cost.

All steel and has holes drilled for tent stakes.

I had to make something that folds up nicely to fit in the car.
