something weird happened at target masters today

i bought a mossberg JIC2 package at target masters today when i gave them the money they put it all (about 400 bucks in 20's) in the photocopier and made a black and white copy of all the bills they said it was mandatory but i have never seen this done before. is it being done in other FFL's in CA or is this just another extra thing target masters does during the gun buying process like the oral test and extra form. also what would keeping copies of the money do? its not like they are going to keep my money in the store for 10 years.

What they did may have been illegal:

The Counterfeit Detection Act of 1992, Public Law 102-550, in Section 411 of Title 31 of the Code of Federal Regulations, permits color illustrations of U.S. currency provided:

* The illustration is of a size less than three-fourths or more than one and one-half, in linear dimension, of each part of the item illustrated

* The illustration is one-sided

* All negatives, plates, positives, digitized storage medium, graphic files, magnetic medium, optical storage devices, and any other thing used in the making of the illustration that contain an image of the illustration or any part thereof are destroyed and/or deleted or erased after their final use

Never saw that before, sounds like Target Masters is either excessively weird, doesn't trust its employees, thinks you're paying with the proceeds of a bank robbery or had a bunch of counterfeit 20s dumped on them. Take your pick. I vote for Option One myself.

maybe they think you are money laundering....Its getting to where the Gov dont want you to use cash anymore cus they cant track what you buy or spend your money on.

Maybe they thought you were a drug dealer or something. However they should know that only
- drug dealers pay hundreds
- strippers pay in ones
- normal everyday citizens pay in twenties because that's what the ATM spits out
