    DROS Question

I purchased a long gun (Ruger 10/22 TD) today. After I finished DROS, the counter guy informed me that he could not release my purchase without a second form of ID (Utility Bill, Car Reg, etc.) when I came to pick up. I told him that to my knowledge that was a requirement for handguns but was not needed for long guns. He agreed but said that it was part of the terms they agreed to to get their FFL back, that it was unique to their store. Now getting the information is not a problem, but I have never heard of this and I am not sure if this is correct. I had thought that the retailer cannot require more than the law allowed, creating an undue burden on the consumer. Any thoughts on this?

FWIW it was Dom's in Livermore.

The only time I am aware of a second proof for a rifle is if the address on your ID is incorrect. Also, I do think they are within the law to require a second proof if they want a second proof. Their store, their rules. Also, I have heard of stores requiring a second proof for rifles, it is stupid.

Well, my address is correct on my license and they had me sign an document stating such. I get that it is their store, but I agree that it is lame. It is not like I don't have the info, I just was curious if it was FUD.

Doms has been doing this for years

They told me that it was not the law, yet. They were preparing for the future. They were a Gallery of Guns outlet and had the best price on a Marlin Papoose.

They told me after the DROS was filled out, too. 10 days later I brought in my PG&E bill, and all was good.

Dealers can indeed have their own business policies; in context of selling firearms, it seems more likely that they might charge the wrong transfer fee, if anecdotes here may be credited.

State does NOT require proof of residence to buy a long gun. I may have forgotten, but I don't remember that AB 214 does have that provision, and no current bill, if passed into law, has that requirement in the current legislative session.

Find out their policies. Vote with your wallet. Tell the FFL why you are going elsewhere, if that's what you choose.

Thanks for the info. I have the PG&E bill so it's not a problem. I was more curious because of the way the employee indicated it was a requirement for their FFL, not store policy. It got me wondering if I had missed something since my last long gun purchase. I had been on kind of a pistol binge and am just getting back into rifles and I like to be knowledgable about the process so there are no surprises.

So if they want you to light off a fart, you would?

Not that that would be a problem for most of us.

Honestly, imho it's a lot easier to tell a customer that it's an FFL requirement that unique to them, rather than argue over store policies

Honestly, if they would have said it was a policy of the store I would have never even started this thread to ask. I get that stores have policies that need o be followed. Lying, IMHO, is never the better choice.
