Flew with a gun no issues

I flew Jet Blue out of Long Beach recently with a handgun. Lady at the ticket counter was very nice, just had me open the pelican case, saw there was a chamber flag in the gun, asked me if the magazines were unloaded...then you just have to fill out a slip, lock everything up again, and be on your merry way.

This was the first time in recent memory that I haven't been selected for additional screening, too! haha.

I have heard that ammo needs to be in a factory box and (not 100% on this) but not in the same case as the gun, but still needs to be in a checked bag.

Ammo can be in the same case as the firearm, and there's a weight limit depending on airline (typically 11 lbs). It must be securely packaged in a separate enclosed container. I use the factory cardboard packaging or aftermarket plastic ammo boxes with dividers.

Do you purchase ammunition when you land at your destinations? My understanding is no ammunition on board at all. Please correct me if I am wrong, I have yet to travel with my firearm but am planning to do so in the near future.

look at the post above, but I would also call the airline you are going to fly with about there policies. (just a thought)

Stupid question...but is this in regards to gu in carry on or check in baggage? I'm assuming gun is in check in.
