Pelican cases/foam sets

Just as a side note, I'm a big fan of the closed cell foam that these folks offer:

It's a much better option than open cell/pick and pluck in my opinion.

I also wasn't quite sure of the purpose of the second set of foam you are offering. Is it just to have a second set of foam or is there something different about the foam from your contractor?

Well that same place does cutting. But it sure isn't cheap.

Great idea but you will need a better price point as one of the CO's on this site (palmettostatearmory.com) sells the 1720 case for $177.99 + free shipping and no sales tax. so that's $177.99 to your door! were you would be about $196.65 to your door. so you need to cut $18.66 off your pricing to make it fly.

Agree. But I pricing if close I'd be interested. only black or colors?

From the suggestions given so far, there appears to be two primary concerns:

(1) The firmness of the foam.
(2) The chemical composition of the foam.

Both can be remedied. I contacted my boss with these concerns and he told me that we are going to visit our foam vendor to sort things out. He is confident that we can get foam that is manufactured to the same specifications as Pelican.

The most popular sizes appears to be the 1700 (perfect for a 16" carbine), the 1720 (good for carbines and rifles), and the 1750 (scoped rifles, etc.). For an initial test run, we are considering getting a batch of 1720s. 15 in black and 5 in FDE sounds reasonable to me.

As for the foam, we are considering offering regular (Pelican factory specification), pluck-and-pick, and closed-cell polyethylene types in various sizes and configurations.

Update

I paid a visit to our primary foam vendor today. Came home with a free sample and a box of foamy goodies.

The sample includes two sheets of polyurethane foam (top and bottom) as well as one sheet of closed-cell polyethylene foam (middle). The polyurethane foam included is slightly softer than the polyurethane foam that Pelican supplies with their cases (it is also of a lighter shade of gray). The middle sheet is more rigid in comparison and serves the purpose of securing the weapon while the other two sheets cushion it. The closed-cell polyethylene foam is waterproof and very easy to cut. Although my vendor recommended using an electric carving knife, I ended up doing the job in under an hour with a pocket knife.

My rifle and gear in the cut sample foam set. The handguard and barrel of the rifle are higher because I have a Surefire bolted to the other side. When reversed, the rifle lies perfectly flat.

The retail price online is going to be around $30 sans taxes and shipping. Inputs welcome.

I'd be interested. I like the idea of a few extra middle layers of foam that I can cut for different weapons. Also interested in the 1750. The 1720 is too short to fly a bolt bolt hunting rifle.

I think I mispoke when I said it had to be 'pelican branded' foam. I mean to say of the same chemical composition as it is well known to be "safe" for nearly any material for an extended length of time.

Some people here think they're rifles are expensive- yeah, when you have $6k+ tied up in a precision rifle with high end optics, it's a lot.... but the professional travelling photograghers whose pictures end up in "nat geo" and the like... have a LOT MORE MONEY than that in their camera lenses, and they've used pelicans for years. They never worry about the foam chemically damaging their equipment. Some types of foam will eat things.

I'm not personally a fan of the "pluck and pick"- thats more for the camera/electronics people. The sheet foam cuts RIDICULOUSLY CLEAN AND EASY with an electric turkey carving knife. Laying out your cut lines is what takes time- cutting with a carving knife is butter. Just an FYI for everyone.

Would you be able to do different foam sizes & hot wire cutting? I've got a SKB 1600 series that fits 4 HG's but I need the foam cut.

I may also be interested in a 1700 or 1720 in FDE.

For now, it's just a batch of 25 sets of 1720 replacement foam. In time and with enough interest, we plan on bringing out foam sets in other sizes as well as the cases themselves.
