Maverick 88's are just an (even more) budget version of a Mossberg 500. From everything I've seen of them, they're just fine for HD. Not sure if they'd stand up to continual use and abuse like say, a Mossberg 590, but for a gun that will sit in the closet or under a bed and be used only in case of emergency, every bit the shotgun that a Mossberg 500 is.

Mav88s are solid. They're such a good deal I feel like I should have one in every room/vehicle, instead of one expensive 590a1.Comment

I went down to Turners. They didn't have a display model but let me see one from the back. It comes with the barrel off in the box and the guy tells me with a look of determination, "I'm not putting it together for you". I didn't ask, he just made sure I knew. So meh, on that. Anyway, it just felt cheap all over. The safety feels like a piece of unfinished plastic. I'm sure it shoots fine. But going from an 1980's 870 Police Model with original wood, I just can't. The one in my safe is like this: http://forum.pafoa.org/general-2/970...ce-magnum.html
I'll wait until I can get the 500 or an 870 Express.RKBA Clock: soap box, ballot box, jury box, cartridge box (Say When!)

I also am a fan of 'hastily accessible' guns, stored for that purchase.
However, I do advocate for securely storing said guns.
With the variety of locking mechanisms that exist today, you should have no trouble locating a set up that covers both bases (quickly accessible and securely locked).
All that said, its still possible to have guns stolen.
Its happened to me...and it was no fun.Comment

YES, I do feel very comfortable having my life rely on a Maverick 88. I've owned 2 of them (sold the first one, regretted it and bought another one). I've put 500+ shells through the first one and 1500+ through the 2nd one, including taking it through a 2-day shotgun course. Zero problems to date, and the damn thing keeps on shooting and works great. Best $200 spent on a shotgun IMO, and I feel more comfortable with a Maverick (made by Mossberg) over something like a Stevens or Interstate... but that's my personal preference).
I find it amusing when people will bash the Mav88's but really have no 1st hand experience with them.
This is true, but ONLY to the accessories and not to the actual guts/internals that makes the gun go boom. I've taken apart many Mossberg 500's and 590's, along with 870's and Benelli's, and the Mav88 is no different with its internals compared to a Mossberg 500. People complain about the Maverick being made from parts that come from Mexico, but the guts that count are made in the US and everything is assembled here.
The main differences you will see is the finish on the receiver, and the fore end setup (cheap 1-piece on the Mav so you need to get a new tube for a different fore end). I actually prefer the safety location on the Maverick over the Mossberg. The only real thing I don't care about is that it has a fixed 5-shell mag tube, like most Mossberg 500's. Or you can find a Maverick 88 with the 8+1 mag tube, but I haven't seen one in CA for the same low price as the 5+1 shotgun.
Bottom line, I actually have a Masterlock trigger lock on my Mav 88 and I keep that stashed on the top shelf of my closet since nobody can get to it (except for me... wife can get to something else since she doesn't like handling shotguns). So I find it as being a perfect "cheap" HD gun.Comment

I really didn't like that safety compared to an 870. It felt hard to manipulate in comparison. It's much smaller diameter wise and I felt my finger kinda fumbling on it.
Big 5 has the 8+1 on sale for the same price as the one at Turners this week.RKBA Clock: soap box, ballot box, jury box, cartridge box (Say When!)

Nothing wrong with Maverick 88's. I've put hundreds of rounds of birdshot, 00 buck, and slugs through mine and it performs flawlessly. The parts are 95% interchangeable with Mossberg 500 parts. Total cost for my setup was no more than $250. It's a great security shotgun at a great price. I duracoated my barrel and feed tube and slung on a shotshell holder and love it!Do you feel comfortable having your life rely on a Maverick 88?
I don't know anything about them really other than they are a cheap shotgun so I certainly would search for info on people who have run them through rigorous tests. If they have problems out of the box which you can't easily fix then that's important.
Reliability is a huge factor in a HD gun.
