    CCW on whale watching boat

I cannot find a definitive answer as to whether you can, with a CCW permit, conceal carry on a whale-watching boat that does not leave US waters, i.e., a 2-hour outing. Does anyone know? Thank you in advance

It is up to the Captain, his ship, his rules. If you are actually breaking a law, he can detain you untill authorities arrive. If you are not breaking any laws, just their policy, they can remove you from vessel.

I was once told that if you carry on a boat that is not yours you have to inform the captain and obtain his permission to bring a gun on his boat.

I would only be concerned with being boarded by the USCG, if that is likely. Not knowing what they do, as I’ve never been boarded while on a boat. On a whale watching boat I think it unlikely, and concealed means concealed. Not hard to do, especially if you are dressed correctly. If there was no warning on the ticket, or signage posted, I wouldn’t be concerned.

That is why I was asking: Is it legal? I prefer not to find out when it is too late.

Please refer to 18USC2277 for the specifics of the offense. It only applies to documented vessels, but if the vessel is carrying more than 6 paying passengers, it has to be documented.

Also please note that the statute makes no provision recognizing a state-issued CCW permit.

The penalty is up to a year in federal prison. It's worth noting that on federal time of less than a year, you do the full time, there are no early release provisions.

I would not want to leave my pistol in a locked car in some parking lot either. You expose your Roscoe often?

I also do not like leaving a firearm in the car, however I do have a combination locked safe in built into my arm rest if I need to. And I never expose my "roscoe"

I have no idea why you would even need to carry a firearm on a whale watching trip? Are there very many harbor seals or whales that are that vicious?

I guess you didnt see my post that I will be carrying to/from boat 8K worth of camera equipment. I do not need the firearm on the boat.

Guys... Remember... "Harbor Seal," "Whale," and "Whale Watching" have different meanings in pimp language than what you're referring to. In pimp language, you bring a "gun," not a "firearm," for those and engaging in such activities. 😏

I don't know what camera system you're running, but after more than a few whale watching trips all up and down the west coast, I'd take minimal gear. Keeping track of all the kit, as well as changing lenes on a rocking boat is a distraction at best. My go to has been a full frame body Canon 5d MK IV, and a 70-200 f2.8 with a couple different filters depending on weather. That set up has worked well from Baja to Alaska. I've never needed a longer zoom, maybe something a bit less on the lower end, but I want the faster 2.8 for this time of year. The unpredictability of the trips makes switching lenes an example of frustration more than anything else. Either way you go good luck.
