Go to any decently stocked shop, look at the $1500 options, and pick any one of them. With your only criteria being "reliable and good looking" there isn't any more info that people can give.
For compliance, you have a dilemma. Featureless is absolutely not good looking, but it is completely reliable since all the mechanical internals are the same as a free state gun. Drop mags the same way, clear jams the same way, reload the same way, etc. Fixed mag sure looks better since it looks like a free state gun, but it definitely does not work the same. Calling it unreliable is going too far, but search the forums for people with fixed mag setups asking "how do I fix ____ on my fixed mag". There will be lots of defenders who will say "my fixed mag setup works as good as ___" but I think even having to make that statement speaks for itself.---------------------

Sounds like it is your first AR. I would suggest a featureless one to make operation simpler as stated above. Springfield Armory Saint $800-900 or Saint Victors $1000-1100 are good units to start with. No need to bust the bank on a fancy AR for a first one, you will get more..... I used to recommend S&W M&P15s for the first one, but they have gone up a lot in price lately making the Springfields probably better value for money. I picked known entry brands that is normally available in plenty of places. Spend a little less on the rifle so you have money for mags, optics, accessories, etc.
If you like the AR you can always buy a lower and build what you want later, or get a higher end model.
There also seems to be a lot of ARs for sale in the marketplace lately. Likely to get a good entry model for a good price.Last edited by FNGGlock; 05-09-2024, 4:46 PM.Comment

Colt isn't Colt any more, zero in house parts made or used. Every part in the Colt AR I bought a couple months ago is contract/low bid parts. I doubt if there's one military spec part in that or any other Colt rifle made today. It's still in the box unfired. Find a real Colt a good used one if you want the old Colt quality buy it and hang on to it.Comment

Daniel Defense or BCM. No bad choices here. I tend to like DD just a little better but they're both excellent. I would normally also add Colt in here for a cheaper, high quality, option, but I don't know what Colt's quality is currently like in light of all their financial problems. They may be fine. I just don't know.
Give some thought as to how you ultimately want to configure the rifle. Like if your goal is to run a red dot or some other type of optic, then you may not want to buy a traditional rifle with the big A2 front sight sticking up in the middle of your optic."Kestryll I wanna lick your doughnut."

SOLGW, DD, or BCM should all have quality rifle builds in your budget with a little room for extras such as an optic.sigpic

i like my CZ Bren 2 and I got it for $1700 new from Sportsman's Warehouse. The carbines are all out though ever since Ukraine started using them as one of its issued rifles.Comment

"Good looking" is in the eyes of the beholder. The featureless fins (thumb blockers) take a bit of getting used to, but there are other Kali compliant alternatives like the SCR. This is the one I built and it is pleasing to my eyes.

You can pick up a off the shelf featureless AR like a S&W M&P or Ruger. If you really want to get fancy find a Sig m400.Comment
