    Hard case required?

I'm shopping for a double rifle case but can't decide on hard case or soft case. I realize there have been numerous threads on this topic but I just want to be sure before forking over money for a decent case.
My actual question is: other than when flying with a rifle, is there ever a time that a locking hard case is required? I know in a vehicle without a trunk a locking case is required for a pistol but is it required for a rifle?
    Thanks for any help

I wouldn't be surprised if amtrak or greyhound required hard cases too, but other than that, no, I don't think hard cases are required.

Regardless of the law, I carry all my guns in a locked hard case when transporting. I do this for 2 reasons. 1, to keep them from getting banged up from bouncing around, and 2, it gives LEO's 1 less grey area to mess with you in.

#1 reason for a hard case in my opinion. I like to protect my guns. Plus you never know when you will need a hard case. Like if you decide to go shooting with a buddy that has a truck and no place inside to store your rifle.

Technically under the federal GFSZ act a locked case is required for long guns as well as hand guns. But a soft case with zipper pulls locked together would meet that requirement. Flying is the only time I know of that a hard case is specicially required.

Odds are that this isn't a question of "which one," it's a question of "which one first."

Hard cases are are great. When you need them, you need them. But they're heavy and bulky. Especially if you're going to go with something like a pelican case.

But for trips to the range and whatnot, I love my soft 5.11 double rifle case. Light, durable, and offers a fair amount of protection for all but the extreme situations.

Yea, you're right. I actually ended up ordering a cheapo Plano hard case then this morning a friend of mine gave me a practically brand new Voodoo Tactical 42" case for helping him with his car. SCORE!

RAW requires a locked container. (as the DOJ has it defined)
all other rifles can be in a soft locked case.
Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.

You can use a soft case(Tuff Case is popular) when flying. A number of people use then when flying to Africa. "I" am going to use a couple of 2 rifle ICC hard (Alum) cases when we go. They have some seconds for $150 with wheels. They are perfect but are the old design with square corners that Cabelas sells. They still have the Cabelas logo on them and are powder coated. I have 2 custom ICC cases for my 50BMg rifles and bought one of the HD 2 rifle cases with wheels($300+) for Africa before I found out about the Cabela ones.
I have been very happy with all the ICC cases. I also have about 9 other cheaper plastic rifle casesI use for trips to the range as well as 20 soft rifle cases.
None of the rifle cases has to be locked except with guns such as a RAW. Pistol cases hard or soft must be locked. I use a mix of metal/plastic/soft pistol cases which are all lockable.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

No your bullet buttoned AR is defiantly NOT a RAW.

You would know if you had a RAW
