    Police contact

Today i got caught speeding. In the process the officer saw my kabar inbetween the passenger seat and center console. He asked what i needed it for so i told him camping etc. I then proceeded to tell him i had a rifle in the back seat that was legal and locked up. He said Ok and walked off and wrote me the ticket. At that point i was expecting a felony vehicle stop with guns drawn but he never referenced it again. Well it sucked getting a speeding ticket but it was nice to have such a laid back experience regardig my rifle when all i hear is about cops being uptight on this forum etc. Just wanted to share my experience from today. This was my first contact with police regarding my rifles and went well

All you're about to get is: Why did you openly admit you had a firearm in the car?

Granted it didn't turn out bad, but some people probably aren't so lucky.

Winning the lottery and getting a cool cop to deal with are increasingly rarer. but props to the Officer for respecting your rights and being level headed.

They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."

Next time STFU, really. Cops will often say, do you have any weapons in your car. The answer is NO. I might have a rifle or a pistol but I never have weapons. Later, if they toss the car and say what's that I thought you didn't have any weapons, you say, oh, that's just my target rifle...get it?

Edit: Put that rifle in the trunk or out of sight.

Well for one, i tend to not be super paranoid. Only to the point where i have a 72 hour pack and trauma kit in the car at all times. And 2 if they toss the car, i also happened to have had multiple articles of clothing that has the departments logo on it.(out of sight to reduce the theft risk) Now granted i do work with them on occasion (traffic control volunteer) i did not know this officer and never saw him before.

My next question is why the heck should i be concerned with not talking about a firearm LEGALLY possessed and kept locked in my vehicle. Their is 0 PC to search my vehicle to check for illegal activities, 90% of all cops are not power hungry "pigs" like so many here like to say. FUD is all i hear from this site about LEOs

I hope you never find out why you should keep your mouth closed... You are playing a game where the risk of destroying your life is a possible outcome. It maybe remote, but its very possible and not worth the ego boost to boast about firearms in the car when there is no reason to.

I allowed a search because I had nothing to hide and nearly bought myself a felony... over nothing. I too was "lucky" the Officer had better things to do.

LEO job is to sniff out crime. They are not there to BS with you about the days folly. You never place yourself into the cross-hairs simply because you THINK they will not pull the trigger.

I am sorry to say this, but LEO are not above suspect behavior. We all know there are bad ones out there. Not a year goes by without some sort of crazy story...robbing banks, beating people to death, planting drugs... LOADING A FIREARM AND CLAIMING IT WAS FOUND THAT WAY....

I hope you never meet that guy... Just for the thread value...

Playing stupid games with law enforcement is great advice.

You did exactly what you should do, don't be defensive , and let him know you have a gun in the car. And your totally right about the Cop Fud on calguns.

It just slays me to hear people talk about LE as is they have a collective mindset. Good/bad everywhere. It seems you got a good cop on a good day. Depending where you live, you may have been just lucky.

Well, obviously you don't look like a scumbag, probably had a bath recently and shaved that morning....

However, by law, once you admit to having a handgun or rifle in your car the Police have a right (called an E Check) to search, inspect the weapon and generally look it over. The admission of a weapon IS CONSIDERED PC.

The problem is, some Police Officers are looking to arrest you. Another problem is when doing an E check, you will be asked to sit on the CURB, sometimes they will CUFF YOU UP (for their own protection ) and toss your entire car.

I have no inclination to mention my legal GLOCK 20SF, unloaded and locked in a travel case nor would I mention my unloaded Carbine in the trunk. I don't need to impress the Police and while I respect their job, I'am not going to delay my departure from the area by being handcuffed on the sidewalk with my legs crossed while a Supervisor arrives to decide my mode of transport is perfectly legal.

While you were lucky in this instance, you should have kept your mouth shut.

Fewer people are killed with all rifles each year (323 in 2011) than with shotguns (356), hammers and clubs (496), and hands and feet (728).

No, I think what you really hear is the majority of us saying "99 times out of 100 things will go perfectly in a LEO encounter. 1 time out of 100 you will run into a rabid hate-filled control freak of an officer who wants nothing more than to ruin your life."

What you hear is a clear warning that you never know when you are going to get one of the 99, or when you will run into the 1.

IF you had run into the one, you could have had been arrested, brought to jail, had your weapon confiscated, had to bail out of jail, had to hire a lawyer, and then when the DA says there is no case, you don't get back the time or the money you had to lay out because of the 1 out of 100 that is an idiotic waste of skin wearing a badge and a gun.

Wow, someone agrees with me. Little bit shocked to be honest.

Im loving the fact that people assume i was boasting about having a gun to the officer. As someone who is pursuing a career in Law enforcement, i would rather have someone tell me about any firearms rather than dodge questions and act like they are hiding something. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Have a little respect for the officers and be upfront. they are going to be a heck of a lot more reasonable if you dont act like a criminal.

I kind of get the feeling that some of you act squirrely during contacts with police and they treat you accordingly. But thats just my 2 cents and not worth anything because im on an anti LEO site supporting police.

In case you all care which i doubt most of you do, i want to pursue a game warden career. Everyone is armed when fishing and hunting.

You did exactly what you should of done and it turned out exactly how it should of turned out.

There are those that go to jail, but those are the ones that are doing something they shouldn't be doing. Not those that are carrying an unloaded weapon legally.

Believe 1/2 of what you hear and most of what you see.
