Go with the one that you are most comfortable with. My preference is the 1911 however if I could have both I'd definitely get a Browning Hi Power. But they would be in 45 and 9mm respectively.

If I were to go with a 40 I would look at HK's, Sigs, Beretta's and similar (since you're already up in that price point).

      1911 in .45 only

      Hi-Power in .40 or 9mm, preferably 9mm

I'm not a fan of going with guns in calibers they weren't originally designed for.

It is very accurate though and the weight of the gun keeps the recoil bearable. The Browning Hi-Power is an very elegant gun and shooting it is a pleasure. My Hi-Power trigger isn't bad at all and shooting it in 9mm is way more enjoyable than shooting my CZ. A Hi-Power in .40 is going to recoil more than the CZ due to it's weight. This is intersting because I find the .40 S&W cartridge way more unpleasant to shoot than the .45 ACP and certainly more than the 9mm Para. I shoot my 1911's all the time as well as my Hi-Power. I don't shoot my CZ too often.
I too dislike the .40 compared to a .45 ACP round.

Browning High Power in 9mm. That classic gun needs no improvement other then removing the mag disconnect that was added due to the French military IIRC.

If you are set to get a .40, buy a gun that was designed for it, like a Glock 22/23/27 was. Usually when an existing design is "upgraded" to a different caliber, you are looking at some type of compromise.

M&P is a great .40 pistol. add the Apex stuff and you're golden

I have a Glock 23 and a decent investment in ammunition. I can't afford to stockpile on 9,40 AND 45. I'd rather invest in the same caliber and enjoy multiple pistols.

I appreciate the information and suggestions. I've never handled an HK or CZ (or BHP for that matter) so it looks like I have a little searching to do to find a shop with them so I can compare.

I posted that picture of that BHP just for the eye candy. The ones I've found for sale are well used and imo look like junk... but when they're in new/custom condition... beautiful.

Note that the .40 version was specifically built for the calibre - infact the new .40 frame became what was used for the 9mm moving forward. There is a difference between the .40 slide and the 9mm 3 locking lugs vs 2 on the 9mm and slightly beefier .

Is this the highpower you're talking about?

Correct the High Power in .40

One of the best sites on the internet for hipowers is Steven Camps. Here is his page on the differences between the 9mm and .40 Hipowers

Check out the HiPower Practical in 40SW. If you like the two tone look it could be something you might want to check out.
