I own a house in a pretty good neighborhood, I am married with two daughters. I recently purchased a 9mm just to be on the safe side. I was wondering if I were to ever encounter a burglar am I suppose to shot him just to injure until cops arrive, or do I automatically shoot to kill? assuming the bad guy doesnt have a gun, only a screw driver or knife. I hope I never have to deal with this situation, but just something I was thinking about.

I'd plan to shoot to stop the threat. Don't shoot to wound.

Might I suggest reading the following book:
How to Own A Gun & Stay Out of Jail by John Machtinger.
California 2011 Edition.
this is the book that you get when you go through the 16 hour CCW class at Cordova Shooting Center.Comment

You shoot and when the threat stops you stop. That is the most simple answer I have for you on this matter.sigpicComment

Don't listen to this. We do not shoot to wound or maim, we do not shoot to kill. we shoot until we feel the threat to our lives is stopped.
What is easier to explain to a court?
"I was shooting to wound this person"
"I was shooting to kill this person"
or
"I was shooting until the threat to my life or the lives of my family was stopped.""Any unarmed people are slaves, or are subject to slavery at any given moment." - Dr. Huey P. NewtonComment

You should take some classes or read that book that another suggested. Dont be ignorant when you own a gun. Know what to do, and be prepared.
Basically you shoot to stop the threat, aim at center mass. Practice at a range a lot. If they are not really threatening you, then in my opinion, I would leave them alone and just say that you have called the police and warn them that you are armed.
If the intruder dies because you are trying to stop a threat, well.... Then they die unfortunately.Comment

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man. Jefferson's "Commonplace Book," 1774_1776, quoting from On Crimes and Punishment, by criminologist Cesare Beccaria, 1764Comment

I go to the range every other weekend. i have been shooting guns since middle school, i shoot AR-15, 1911, 12gauge, .270, .308, and now my 9mm. i was just wondering, because if someone were to get killed in my house I dont think i could still live in it.You should take some classes or read that book that another suggested.
