I am in the market for my first HD shotgun. I do have shotguns that I used for hunting one is a 870 the other is a benelli M1 that has a camo finish, both are in 20ga. I have been shopping around for accessories for both in a comparison of money, I have learned that benelli stuff is expensive. My pump I am worried about short stroking it when under stress, I want to know the pros and cons of both, before I make a decision on which one on invest in. I would like to stay with a 20ga. Because of shoulder problems.

Best shotgun for HD pump or auto. Why?

Pump...without a doubt. Only reason I say that it I have almost NO experience with auto loader
Go with whatever one you feel more comfortable shooting.
I hear ya on the shoulder issues. Look into the Mesa Tactical recoil reducing stocks. I run one on my work 870 and can sling slugs all day w/o being sore at all. -
I say pump. Less chance it will malfunction, and if you do it right you'll only need one shot so rapid firing doesn't necessarily have to be a concern.postcount++Comment

FN SLP gas powered semi-auto is my HD shottie. The FN is much more reliable than the more common Remmy 1100 or 11-87
Less felt recoil, faster cycling, no chance of short stroking, tolerant of any reasonable HD ammo...but you should test it in your gun.
I found the SLP a nice medium between the Mossberg 930 SPX and the Benelli M4...because the journey is the worthier part...The Shepherd's TaleComment

Pump because...
Simple machine and my hand is on the cocker. Shell doesn't go off? Rack and try again.
Very natural and easy to operate.
Not wanting to shoot anyone the sound of the shotgun racking has the possibility of scaring the bad guy away.
I prefer the Winchester Model 97 shotgun. It has an exposed hammer so I can de-cock it by lowering the hammer and if you hold the trigger down it fires at the end of each pump action. A handy thing for a full fledged zombie attack.^^ Said by some lunatic on the internetComment

I think too many people shy away from the semi-auto shotgun and I don't understand why when they have a semi-auto. handgun on their nightstand. Generalizing here but I bet most h.d. shotguns spend most of their time under beds/in safes. I would trust your clean semi-auto shotgun will work just fine in your room temperature home when a lot are designed for MUCH harsher conditions and higher round counts between cleanings:
I like both a lot. I'm just evening things outLast edited by Javi; 03-26-2012, 8:21 PM.Originally posted by d4v0sMy girlfriend and i used froglube last night in a pinch and it works great.Comment

I want to get a Cimmaron replica pretty bad and it'll be my HD gun and would get used in cowboy shoots if I chose to participate later.

Both can work, but get some training whichever route you go...
Pump == more tolerant of ammunition, simpler, cheaper
Auto == lower recoil, quicker to bring back on target, less likely to short-stroke
There's no wrong answer. You have to find what works for you. Mine is a pump.Riflemen Needed.

If you have any concerns about your shoulder or the operation of the gun under stress and being able to move about in tight quarters. Just go get a good ole fashioned double barrel coach gun. You can shoot it in close quarters without having to shoulder the gun plus it is pretty short overall which makes it great for tight spots. Sorry I know this was not choice that you asked about but I could not say just get a Glock, it just does not fit the bill. If Glock does come out with a AR or a shotgun it is over for the rest.sigpicComment

This is why I vote for, and bought a pump. My first line of home defense is standing at the top of the stairs and racking a round. It's a chance for the BG to get the hell out before I come down. I also alternate rounds, so if I decide #4 bird shot isn't going to cut it, I can rack it out and know that I have 00 buck ready to go. With 7 in the tube and 5 on the stock, I feel pretty well equipped to handle any situation that could present itself.Originally posted by MezcalfudBecause a Glock looks great in the case and then when you take it home it feels like you're holding a Costco pack of Kielbasa.Comment
