FFL internet/mail order sticker shock!!

lets see here.most buy there ammo from wally world.most buy their accessory stuff online or waste the time of the shop then getting it online. most get pissy for buying a lock.most get pissy becuase the customer has to take an hsc test pay for dros and pay taxes on it.most get pissy becuase they have to provide a proof of residency.most don't buy more than 3 guns a year. the shops deal with boffers atf customers that say they can get it online for cheaper and pay rent and all the other bills.don't forget about the ppt they have to do for 10 that gets spent on the clerk and the lights.if you look most dealers already mark their guns down 50-100 off suggested retail. next time try going to big 5 or sportsmans wharehouse to have a gun shipped to them.oh ya thats right they don't do that.

seems to me a gun store would want to make a customer happy and encourage repeat visists

how much does it cost to mail a signed ffl to another dealer, accept the firearm during buisness hours,log it in do the dros, log it out

a photocopy in the outgoing mail $1(40cent stamp 20 cent envelope 10 cent copy)
logging it in from the ffl filing his signed copy 10 minutes so how about $5
the dros well that is its own fee
half hour to do the dros so how about $15
10-20 day storage of 1 cubic foot hmm would $20 be fair?
pick up paperwork another half hour $15

so how about $60 plus ca dros fees?
value of happy customer?

F- (some) California FFLs, they are taking advantage of thier customers because they have the opportunity to do so. People buy stuff off of the internet because they dont have to deal with know-it-all jacka--es, rude salespeople, ignorant salespeople and a total and complete lack of customer service before, during and after the sale. They do all this while hiding behind the skirt of the agencies they profess to hate but meanwhile is enabling them to gouge thier customers and call it a "service". I buy all my gear off the internet or at big chain stores like Bass Pro Shops. Occasionally, Ill find a mom and pop that will go the whole 9 yards and actually provide a service, instead of making me feel like Im incoviencing them by wanting to purchase something. When I do, I go there faithfully until I move away, then Ill try and order from them over the phone!
I still buy stuff from a dealer with whom I made friends, and he is in Georgia.

ADDED- Ive tried to order things from 2 or 3 of the vendors/dealers here but the only one that wanted my buisness was DDs Ranch. Some folks didnt respond to emails and phone calls, some folks made it seem like an inconvienence to them, so I went to Midway, Bass Pro and a custom AR guy in another state.
That was about $3500 worth of product that I bought somewhere else because the California guys didnt want the buisness.

People don't realize that EVERYTHING you purchase out-of-state is supposed to have use-tax paid on it.
Only this year has the FTB finally made an entry field on the 540 so that you can pay the tax yourself......

True that one owes "use tax" on all out of state purchases that are used in CA...been that way for decades. But this is NOT the first year the USE Tax /Sales Tax entry was on your 540.

It too has been there always, just 4 years ago they made it more "front and center" on the form and make you deliberatly write a value. One can say "zero" or otherwise. Just remember that one also signs that tax return attesting to is validity....see where they are going with it now?

what about the california gas i use driving around in nevada do i owe the state of nevada tax?

You pay sales tax at the point of purchase if you take possession of the item...such as your gas. What you do with it later is of no concern to the tax man (but see my last comment at the end on a recourse here)

On the otherhand, you owe "Use Tax" on items that you pay for, but donot take possession of at the point of sale. This "Use Tax" is owed to whichever state you take inital possession of the item in.

I will add that if one purchases an item in CA and pays the sales tax on it, but then turns around and takes the item out of state for the next 30 days for use, they can apply for a sales tax refund from the BOE. This is on the grounds that the primary use point is not in CA.

I've run accross this all over here and out in d' world. I'm now inclined to use a kitchen counter FFL or two I know to do deals like these--even if I have to drive outta my way to do it. But I've seen 10% of the value of the gun, 10% AND $50, 5% of the value AND $75... My two guys will do it for $20 and NADA if they've delt with the place before and already has thier FFL on file....unfortunately one of these guys is not taking any more business from new clients, the other....well, he is one mentioned here from time to time by others & is in the northbay: thats about all I'll say about him as he is kinda a quiet guy & likes things that way from what I gather.

Don't like their price? Find a different one. There are plenty out there who'll do it for 75$ - 50$ to them, 25$ to the state which is plenty fair.

Also, I was going to pay their premium (over retail) and support the local business by buying a rifle until the sales guy had piss poor attitude and bad customer service.

The 'Use Tax' is where the state is going to get the internet sales taxed. It is just a sales tax but on things you have delivered into the state. Also it seems to includes handling charges on the total amount of the sale, increasing the tax levied.

By making you fill in an amount in Line 49 of the 540 form and then signing your John Hancock to it they have set you up for tax evasion charges.

By having the ISP's keep records of your internet wanderings and the diligent investigative powers of state agencies you will be exposed as a tax cheat to be shunned by your fellow citizens and imprisoned.

So out of state purchases aren't so attractive anymore.

This is a simple question of supply and demand.

Yes it is! So, you have nothing to bitch about. If the demand wasn't there, FFLs couldn't charge so much. Also, nobody has brought up prices based on location. Since a shop in a high rent area has to pay more rent, shouldn't they be able to charge accordingly? Or, should they all just move somewhere cheap like Taft? I don't think 10% wants that to happen though.
