Full auto shooting in Oakland

Why in the world would anyone be using a bumpfire stock that they'd probably have to buy, when it's already easy enough to make a gun dump a whole magazine in auto(which would of course be a modification that's illegal for us law abiding citizens).

I didn't think the conversion to FA was that easy.

A buddy of mine had an old Marlin .22 turn itself into a full auto rifle. Something broke or wore out. Just hold the trigger and empty it.

His brother encouraged him to break it in half on the spot. I don't know if he did or not but it sure wouldn't be worth the risk of keeping it to me.

I got one...Thompson .45, (Al Capone style) went full auto. Yum yum.

P.S. the owner shipped it back to the factory A.S.A.P.

I think you're missing the point; what he's saying (I believe) is that it may very well be a plain jane firearm (semi-auto or whatever) that was used in an illegal manner, but not necessarily a full-auto.

We all are painfully aware of the medias seemingly willful ignorance when it comes to all things firearms related. And to the standard citizen, not familiar with select fire, someone cranking off rounds quickly can sound like a "machine gun".

Heck even LEO gets these things wrong all the time. No one is saying that the shoot itself was legal by any means, just that the jump to conclusion that is was a select-fire weapon, based upon the information given, is a bit premature and, of course, inflammatory.
"Oh no! MACHINE GUNS ON THE STREETS OF OAKLAND!"

Not to say that the bad guys don't have illegally converted firearms, just that it's comparatively rare and to base these speculations upon one quote from an a single online source (I've tried to find some corroborating stories and have come up snake-eyes.) is, well, silly.

A witness told ABC7 he heard so many gunshots that it sounded like whoever had the fully automatic, unloaded the entire clip.

Some bad guys with one or more firearms shot some other people.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to make a gun shoot FA, or just dump an entire mag after 1 trigger press(not in a controllable way). For a lot of guns, it doesn't require some engineer and machine shop to make parts. Lightning links, DIAS, intentionally breaking disconnectors, etc. can cause it. It's not like you need to completely change the internals on an AR to make it open bolt or something to do a mag dump without just bump-firing it.

It seems that one guy is reported as shooting with full auto. They didn't find the guy or recover a weapon, so I'd bet money that it was some kind of bump fire device instead of a real full auto weapon.

Maybe they were using home-converted full-auto ARs. Every knows that all you need to do is file something on the disconnector of any semi-auto AR-15, and Viola! A full auto M16. I've been told this by numerous range commandos, so it must be true! Right?

According to the news story, the full-auto gun "emptied the clip". I can only conclude the AR had the old style maglock which required you to break open the upper of AR to manually load the fixed magazine with a 10rd stripper clip.

There is a very real possibility that he bought the weapon illegally or stole it - and that it was already converted or a FA weapon to begin with.

More or less even knew what bumpfiring is.

Okay, I'm curious; why would you discount an entirely plausible explanation?

Again; one person reported:

What's more plausible:

1. Bad guy shooting a firearm (semi-auto, revolver, doesn't matter) quickly (and more than one person firing a weapon) and a citizen, probably ducking for cover, whom has *never* heard full auto fire before, misinterpreting what they heard.
2. Or - a actual select-fire weapon was involved?

Without more info speculation is just useless. I guess I'm just trying to find out why people won't use their critical thinking skills in this situation? It's like people WANT it to be a machine gun. Why?


We can all agree that (from the article) the people involved on both sides appear to be less than model citizens. Guns were involved. People got shot.

Not denying that the bad guys have them, just saying that based upon the limited info we have, in this one article, from one second-hand source, to make that assertion is... pretty thin.
