You are lucky you escaped with only a small knife wound.
Getting killed would have been worse.
Worse yet, would be killing some teen Hispanic for attempting to steal someone else's car and spending the next twenty to life in prison with Bubba.
Next time, put down the gun and pick up the phone.
    True, quite true.

Property crime does not warrant risking deadly force.

Just dial 9-1-1 and keep your distance.

There is noting wrong with going out to ask the guys, "Can I help you?" As soon as you see the knife, do it. Then again, that is a lot of paperwork and lawyers. Maybe next time just call the cops is right.

But it became a lethal force encounter when one of the suspects pulled a knife. The businessman has every legal right to contact them on his property, determine what they are doing on his property and to protect himself if need be.

If there was no evidence of a crime in the actions of the suspects prior to the knife coming out, to what purpose would a call to 911 been appropriate? Just because they are passing by an auto repair business open to the public and happen to be looking at a car (maybe it was a really cool car?) doesn't elevate their conduct to the point that police action would be warranted. For all anyone might know, they could be potential customers.

If they were observed actually breaking into a vehicle, then I would agree. But if all they are is walking by and looking at cars parked in the lot of an auto repair business, then contacting them first seems to not be out of bounds.
