Man stabbed while trying to detain suspects.

Man stabbed while trying to detain suspects
At 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responded to Lost Hills for a victim of a stabbing.

Mario Soto suffered a cut to the neck. Soto told deputies that he was working inside the GMC General Auto Repair business when he saw three Hispanic juveniles in the front parking lot near the customer's vehicles.

Soto said he armed himself with a handgun and went outside to confront the trespassers. While in the parking lot, he saw two suspects attempting to steal a car dolly from the business and a third suspect near a customer's vehicle.

Soto approached the suspect near the vehicle and tried to detain him but was stabbed once in the neck. Soto told deputies that he fired at the suspects twice, once in the air and once towards the ground. Soto said the suspects ran from the business, leaving the car dolly behind.

Soto was taken to Kern Medical Center in stable condition.

Deputies searched the community of Lost Hills for the suspects, but were unable to find them.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kern County Sheriff's Department at 861-3110 or Secret Witness at 322-4040.

Anonymous texts can be sent to TIP411 (847411). Just type "KCSO" before the message.
Someone needs to train more. Keep your distance and when you see the knife, shoot!

Into the AIR?!?!!??!?!?!! and then the Ground?!?!?

    *sigh*

It is unlikely the criminals will be apprehended. It IS likely that this gentleman may face some prosecution. All he had to do was say he fired at them and missed, but two warning shots?? After being cut?
...but their exists also in the human heart a depraved taste for equality, which impels the weak to attempt to lower the powerful to their own level, and reduces men to prefer equality in slavery to inequality with freedom.

He is not going to get prosecuted. This is Kern County and he was stabbed. Not even sure why you would suggest that.

Hopefully for him, the fact he was cut by a knife first before firing a warning shot will keep him from being charged.

10% is right, he won't get prosecuted.

He's also right in saying "Not even sure why you would suggest that"

The stabbing victim should learn that his firearm is not a warning device. He should have bought one of those air-powered horns instead.

          Front sight, center mass, squeeze.

Mostly because the article seems to infer warning shots.

It was legal to discharge the firearm at the time (clearly self defense due to being attacked) so that may factor into the concept of overriding the illegal discharge of a firearm...

I suppose it just, bothers me and Mr. Knee-Jerk got the better of me.

"Then there are sheepdogs. The sheepdogs are the bastions of safety. The sheepdog lives solely to protect the flock and confront the wolf. They live for the opportunity to be called to duty to protect the innocent. The sheepdog has fangs and the propensity for violence but hopes that he will not have to resort to it. However, he lives for that day when he will be able to use his warrior skills and mindset to keep the wolf from harming the sheep."

Geez. This guy need to do a little averaging and have both shots meet in the middle, where center of mass is located.

Clearly this bothered me too! Why did the guy who brought a knife to a gun fight win?

However, the newspaper is hardly the place for the true story. Just reading the news story he didn't say he was firing a warning shot. He said he shot in the air and in the ground. It doesn't say he meant to, that is where he shot. He might have been aiming for the guy and realized his two shots were bad.

Plus he had been stabbed. I shoot pretty good at IDPA, but I also have never had a scenario where I physically get stabbed first and then fire.

And with it being Kern County and the guy was a victim of a crime, he won't get prosecuted. Hopefully the deputies chewed him a new one about next time staying in his garage and calling the cops if he isn't willing to go out and defend himself from a deadly attack.

Yo Mario, you may own a gun, that doesn't make you a law enforcement officer
You are lucky you escaped with only a small knife wound.
Getting killed would have been worse.
Worse yet, would be killing some teen Hispanic for attempting to steal someone else's car and spending the next twenty to life in prison with Bubba.
Next time, put down the gun and pick up the phone.

I work on the farms all around Lost Hills. It's a dark and scary place at night and during the day it's just a funky place. There is all kinds of Agricultural Theft going on around there. It (lost hills) straddles hwy46 and it is a great place to stop and rob people. Then get back on hwy 46 for a few miles then Interstate 5 is right there. Clean get away.

Lost Hills is a rough place that is very far from any semblance of Law. It is patrolled by the Kern County Sheriff's Department. But it's a large urban area to cover.

I say Mario Soto needs to be on the look out for a while to ward off any retaliatory attacks.

I'm not understanding how or why you would let someone come ten feet from you if you had a weapon drawn and they were advancing with a knife? Sorry, lights out! -g

It takes a really hardened heart to shoot someone.

Many people will find out that they cannot do it.
