Some questions have easy answers: Yes, you should get one.

RWVA / Appleseed is one good way to qualify for the CMP requirements, if you don't already (see the Calguns Appleseed forum for more). Once you have the paperwork, dealing with the CMP is almost painless.

I only shoot my field grade which is one of the lower graded ones. But even a field grade is in great condition. Just a few character marks on the stock.

You may have to tinker with a CMP Garand. They are OLD and may have some worn out springs or parts that should be replaced. I recently got a CMP Garand. First time out, it would eject the clip after only 3 rounds fired. Did a search and learned I needed a new clip latch spring. Got that, and it solved the problem. Next it had failures to extract/feed, so I replaced the op-rod spring. Haven't had a chance to test it but I bet it will solve it. I don't mind having to do these minor repairs, as it helps me learn how the gun is engineered. And I'm not surprised to find some worn out springs on a 50+ year old rifle! (Actually, my receiver is is from 1942, which makes that part 70 years old, which to me is just cool.)

Surprised to read the above,, when i was a vollunteer there many yrs. ago, twice a week we would take a truck filled with racks of Garands to a local gunshop which had a rifle test rack with a bullet trap attached and we would run a full clip through each gun. We brought enough extra bits that if we had a finnicky one it could be fixed on the spot. As volunteeers we had a rivalry going to see if we could get the least failures to function vs. the CMP armourers. The vollunteers frequently came out ahead as we were super finicky. As a reward for a week of free labour we werre allowed to pick our own rifles, we still had to pay for them but we picked our own! Great times. JT

So help me....If they sell out of Correct grade M1 Garands before I can get my hands on one!!!

I bought my correct grade almost 10 years ago. It is so beautiful. Whenever it is at the range, other shooters stop and ask about it. I always tell them CMP is the way to go.

They do still test them but sometimes these spring problems are on again / off again. It's always good to just pick up a new spring pack (Orion 7 has good ones) and just swap out all of the springs on the initial breakdown/clean/grease session. Saves any weirdness later.
