Would she feel more comfortable if the big scary gun were something less scary like a .410? It seems like there is a growing trend towards the round as a HD weapon that is more suitable for women and older children.

I'm sure most here would say anything less than a 12 gauge is too weak, but I'd feel well armed with a .410 in hand.

My wife was the same way...untill a buddy showed her graphic crime scene photos of a 45 year old mother and a 13 year old girl and 1 year old boy raped and beaten to death over the course of 3 days by crackheads. The baby was dead within 2 hours of the entry. The mother was dead in 24 hours, the 13 year old was kept alive for 48 hours.

Then there was the 2 guys up north who held a woman for months after killing her child within hours of her kidnapping. They video taped her rape, torture and murder. She was not their only victim.

Now weigh that against the girl who shot and killed the guy who was breaking into her house just weeks after her husband died this past Christmas. Her only thought was to protect her child.

If the defense of your life and the lives of the ones you love starts off with, 'I don't want to think about that", you have already failed. There is serious evil in this world, you need to plan on evil finding you.

if I didn't have guns, I'd get a guard dog, if not a guard dog, than a tazer.

PLEASE, do not EVER load less lethal ammo for use in a life or death defensive situation. Even the police do NOT use less lethal force without others right next to them prepared to use regular ammo to nuetralize any threat. You girl is not trained to use less lethal ammo and it would NEVER be correct to use it when trying to stop an immediate threat.
^^^this. With a taser/stun gun accompanying the pepper spray. Firearm with "less than lethal" is a no no on many levels

I have some 3" 410 #000 for my Circuit Judge. It seems pretty formidable with 5 pellets. It's really 1/2 of a stout 20 or "low recoil" 2-3/4" 12g.

              ^^^this person is correct^^^

If you discharge a firearm, you do it in fear for your life. If you're going to shoot someone, do it with an effective round/load.

If she does not want a gun, don't force her. She won't be comfortable and it'll be a liability without training and confidence in her ability to utilize it properly.

The limitations of pepper spray and tazers... if they worked effectively all of the time, LEOs wouldn't have to carry guns.

Pepper spray, although directional can also affect the user as well through contact with the target, air currents, misuse. And it's not always effective. Painful, yes. Debilitating? Depends. The stream ones are harder to hit with on a moving target than you'd think.

The reliability of a tazer is not something I would ever depend on. The barbs don't always stick on the person. They don't penetrate heavy clothing very well. IF he goes down, a barb may dislodge, preventing further usage. IF he goes down, he most likely will recover at some point. Given that they're usually a one (three at most?) shot deal, what happens if there are more than one assailant?

Like someone said above, use it and RUN! These are not tools that reliably put down attackers.

              Neither are handguns really...

Back in 2003 I worked at a datacolo in Downtown LA. One of my coworkers was a 55 year old woman.

For christmas I bought her a can of pepper spray. She kept it in her car. One day, she was out side the building 1 Wilshire and a homeless schizo attacks her. No one who saw would help her, not even security guards.

She carried the spray from then on with her.

Then they did their job correctly. Most security gaurds are not there for specific reasons. Interviening in an attack is normally NOT one of those reasons and could easily get a rent-a-cop terminated. PRivate security is not law enforcement and the good ones know that and do their jobs as instructed. The mall ninjas don't know or can't understand where the line is drawn and end up getting companies sued.
