Hey Calgunners, here's the scoop: My wife is moving home (Illinois) in a few short weeks and I'll be stuck here in San Diego for a few more months. I have offered (begged) to buy here a small caliber handgun, just in case, because it will be her and my 2 year old in a small town. A town that happens to have plenty of meth heads. However, she is very, VERY clear that she does not want to have a gun (sort of, you'll see what I mean in a second) in the house unless it's mine and I'm there. So my question is this: What can I get her that will ensure that she will be able to protect herself and our child if someone were to threaten their well-being? I've been eyeballing "less lethal" bean bag rounds and tasers and such. Don't ask me why she is OK with a 12 guage bean bag and not 12 guage buckshot, the inner workings of a woman are a mystery to me. I'd love to get an opinion. Thanks!

Tazer or pepper spray.
Digression: Both are 'less than lethal'; ordinarily they're called 'non-lethal' but there have been deaths associated with their use, and folks are still arguing about the causes. Manufacturers, of course, argue their products are safe. Attorneys for the deceased disagree.
Both are 'shoot and scoot' - don't stay around to admire the effects, disable/distract the attacker and move.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good! -
Pepper spray and a dog - it seems she doesn't want to shoot anything, and that's not something you're going to be able to change in a few weeks.Link to my feedback: https://www.calguns.net/forum/market...ser-tradecraftComment

Dog first. Pepper spray second, gun with normal ammo third, pet skunk fourth, sharp stick, baseball bat, .............. notice, not once did I think that less lethal bean bag or rubber rounds would be a decent choice. PLEASE, do not EVER load less lethal ammo for use in a life or death defensive situation. Even the police do NOT use less lethal force without others right next to them prepared to use regular ammo to nuetralize any threat. You girl is not trained to use less lethal ammo and it would NEVER be correct to use it when trying to stop an immediate threat.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

There are no great men. Just great challenges which ordinary men, out of necessity, are forced by circumstance to meet.Comment

Maybe you and your family can join us at IGOLD 2012 (Illinois Gun Owner Lobby Day), the largest annual gun-carry demonstration in America. Sorry, but Tazers, cannot be carried outside the home in Illinois, and it is a felony to do so, unless unloaded and completely enclosed in a case. I guess "unloaded" for a Taser would probably mean the battery must be removed. If you thought California gun laws are bad, welcome the Land of Lincoln.
Check us out on IllinoisCarry.com. A lot like CalGuns.net, only more local. My wife has a S&W .38 special revolver, eventually yours will come around.

I'm 98 percent sure "Less that lethal" shotgun ammo is illegal in Illinois. Apparently the NannyState legislature wants people to "shoot-to-kill", since they haven't banned 00 buckshot yet.Comment
