Keeping gun safe in the garage?

Besides people being able to see the safe
When the doors are open; any potential
Issues with dampness or any other garage
    Type Problems?

    Thanks

Dampness for sure. I am not convinced that dessicant will do the job. Putting the safe next to a furnace or even water heater would help. Best thing is to shoot regularly.

The only reason I dont have a safe in the garage is because I have all my power tools in there and they could be used to get in the safe.

I just noticed yesterday that my neighbors gun safe is located in the front of his garage, I could not help but think it was a horrible idea, but it is better than nothing. Also +1 on having a bunch of power tools next to your safe, not smart.....

If you put it in the garage put a golden rod in there to keep the moisture out.

Lol. Typical ppl in SoCal going overboard. Socal isnt a humid enviornent that your safe will have moisture, especially indoors. Maybe in Florida where the air is constantly humid.

For times when the garage door is open hang a blue tarp or old bed spread over it.

I have a friend who's safe is in the garage, and to camo it he taped a refrigerator box to the three sides visible from the sidewalk.

What he said was that he does not keep a safe in the garage because of his power tools.

Yes a dehumidifier will be a must because of the drastic change in temp in a garage. Safe bottoms are usually not painted. Put some wood down under the safe. Preferably 3/4 inch plywood to insulate the safe from the cold concrete floor. It will also prevent rust if the floor gets wet or if your water heater leaks if its close. Just throw an old blanket over it to keep the "looky loose" guessing........

I keep my safe in a spare bedroom in a controlled temp enviroment. Even in the middle of summer here in Tracy when temps could be in the 90s, I can trap up to 6oz of water inside my safe in three weeks. The desiccant container I use has a reservoir that traps the water to show the proof. Its amazing how much water I trap but its true......

I keep my safes in my garage and have never had a problem. I use a Goldenrod dehumidifier in each safe and I sealed the anchor bolts with a silicone sealant to keep out moisture in the event of a flood. (burst washing machine supply lines, etc.) My washing machine drain line has, in fact, clogged in the past causing a deluge in the garage. My safes suffered no ill effect nor did the darlings housed inside.
There is the issue of visibility from the street when the garage door is open, but in my case I find that my safes are not that obvious since I have machinery at the mouth of my garage and it tends to camouflage them. I spend a lot of time in my garage with the door open so when I notice strangers approaching I try to head them off so they don't get too close for an eyeful. And if they do I kill them.
                          Just kidding.

I keep my safe in the garage as that is the only place where I had room to put it. I keep dessicant in it and it sits next to the water heater. So far no problem with humidity. I live in Santa Clara Valley.

Short of being outside the garage is the worse place in the house for a safe. Mostly due to the constant temperature changes.
