I've been at the range and heard the "ping" of the M1 clip being ejected. This was over other people firing and while wearing ear pro.

My grandpa said you could hear the ping in battle, but nothing more.

His biggest complaint about the M1 was the linseed oil in the stock. When it would get hot from shooting (Okinawa) it would become slick. So he would grab some sand and rub it on the stock.

Yes, you can definitely hear the ping wearing ear pro while other people are shooting at the range. But from how far away is the question. And obviously hearing the ping doesn't mean everyone ran out at the same time.
