Free-float vs non-free float hand guard?

The system i am running on my ar platform is:

lmt 14.5 pinned battlecomp 1.5 and a aimpoint ml2 optic with a standard front sight. will having a free floating rail making any accuracy difference and i don't think i will be shooting no more than 150-200 yards...

I wouldn't bother free floating your barrel if that's as far as you're going to shoot. With practice you'll extend your range a lot farther than that and still be able to hit consistently without ever free floating your barrel.

@droppin deuces, that make sense. I might consider the Troy drop in carbine battle rail. What do u think?

Those are nice. I have a KAC M4 RAS, but if I hadn't been able to find a good deal on that I would have gotten the TROY or Daniel Defense EZ Car 7.0. They are all pretty similar. I think looks-wise the Daniel Defense is the nicest of the three.

Let me just say that I'm not trying to stop you from getting a free float handguard. After all, it's better to have and not need than to need and not have. It's just that the benefits are very small unless you're out there trying to shoot little tiny groups off of the bench, you most likely will never notice a difference between floated and not.

I would love to get the KAC M4 RAS rail if I can find someone who has it for a great deal!

I have a similar upper. 14.5" BCM BFH Upper w/ 1.5 Battle Comp. I tried the Magpul MOE Mid lenght handguards and i love them. It has a solid feel to it. I got the hand guards, illumination kit, rail kit, and forward MOE grip for under $60 @ riflegear.

This rifle shoots 1" groups @ 100yrds with iron sights.

Unless you have a competition barrel or shooting varnmints from 600+ yrds away, free float is not a necessity. Looks cool but it's pricey. Plus most of them will require for you to remove the barrel.

If your looking for a good rail that's drop in, vltor is the coolest IMO .

Bench rest with cadwell bean bags & Fionchi 55gr .223. My $1,000 BCM is more accurate than my $2,300 POF...

Thanks for the feedback. My set up is really CQB and with all the feedbacks I don't see the need for free float.

I've had better groups with a free float, but i'm sure it has a lot to do with the shooter.

Then again, less contact with the barrel means less interference which does equal more accuracy... however little or big the improvement is. Just look at any quality bolt-action rifles and you'll see they are all free-floated.

how bout get the best of both worlds, and get a drop-in Centurion Arms free-float rail?

They are even making a 12" FSP model, which is, IMO the best solution for guys running 14.5" uppers.

I was actually eyeballing their C4 Extended Mid Length cut out since i have a FSP.

They are light and easy to install but it's going to cost me $320 just to improve the look of my rifle... still, they are really nice.
