Man dies after accidentally shooting himself at Riverside range
A 24-year-old Riverside man died Friday morning after accidentally shooting himself in the head at a local firing range, police said.

Police say a surveillance video shows that the 24-year-old shot himself in the head while 'kind of fumbling around' with a handgun.

    November 24, 2007

A 24-year-old Riverside man died Friday morning after accidentally shooting himself in the head at a local firing range, police said.

Surveillance video from the Riverside Magnum indoor public shooting range showed the man loading a handgun and appearing to inadvertently fire a single shot to his head just moments after arriving.

The video showed the man "kind of fumbling around" as if he were unfamiliar with the weapon, said Lt. Paul Villanueva of the Riverside Police Department. Range employees give customers basic instructions before they shoot, said manager Fred Buchholz, who added that this was the first such incident at the range.

Authorities are investigating the incident. The man's name is being withheld pending notification of his family.

The way it was presented in other articles I've read, it seems to have been more likely a Spontaneous Darwinian Test.

We have a range here in the East Bay where three people have off'd themselves in the last ten years. Because of my desire to avoid having "collateral damage" being written in my obituary I no longer shoot there.

I spotted a customer there and he was complaining that his laser didnt work right. He asked if i could take a look at it and i reluctantly complied. He then pulls it up and points it at his buddies back who is in the lane shooting. I pushed the gun down right away and his response was, "what? its not like its loaded or anything." I grab the gun and cleared it and a round popped out of the chamber. I just shook my head, grabbed my gear and continued out the door.
I feel sorry for the poor sap to capped himself but seriously people. Its one less in the gene pool that lacked common sense. The riverside magnum range is ran by people who dont give a **** or control the range. They just take your money and let you into the war zone.
Yep, used to go there quite a bit and there was no control, no range officer, and the single guy who ran the place was always in the back eating or watching TV until they had to help a customer with ammo, renting a gun, or just taking payment for range time.

It's common, I knew a guy whom worked at the Firing Line in HB, one night a girl offed herself while he was watching, apparently over a break up with her boyfriend, anyways, he was tramatized and quit his job... about 6-7 years later, i ran into the Firing Line's gun manager, we talked and happen to touch based on the same guy, it turns out the mgr ran into the guy at the Santa Ana Court, since lots of Police agency uses the Firing Line, the mgr asked one of the officer why the guy is in a Orange Jumpsuit... apparently this guy was a serial robber/murderer, he was doing home invasions on Little Saigon's Jewery district, he would follow them home, rob them , then murder the family..apparently he did it to a least three families... Don't know if the sighting of the girl's suicide touch off something in his mind

Very interesting, but more likely the guy was just a dirtbag that needs a lethal injection. That's still too good.

Sounds like TMW, that's why you can not rent a gun if you go in by yourself now, unless you BYOG. Someone has to sign for your mental state.
