I just went through something minorly similar and the shop had to call ATF to make sure they were within the law.

I dont know about a "2nd" proof of address, I've never heard about that, but in my case my CA D/L address is off by one digit on my current address and I never bothered to get a new one issued even though I did the online form. It never really mattered because I always had my vehicle registration, only as circumstances would play out right now, I also just got a new vehicle and even if I wanted to use the paper on the old vehicle that registration expired in Nov... and I havent received the new paperwork yet! CATCH 22! bigtime!

I think that gun shop asking for a 2nd "proof" is reaching a little bit. Either it's a valid Govt ID / document or it's not... and in my case since I had one that was "valid" but "incorrect" I had to jump through a couple extra hoops. In your case, I think the guy working the counter may have been mistaken about needing a 2nd form of ID.

Bought my first handgun on the 19th of December. Told me when I come to pick it up, bring a 2nd proof of residency and it had to be some type of proof sent by the government. Meaning only my vehicle registration worked.

When it comes to rifles, you need a 2nd form of proof of residency if the address on your government issued ID is not the address of your residence (i.e.- having only a PO BOX listed on your DL, as I do).

You can now use a hunting or fishing license as they are printed out licenses on Dept. of Fish and Game paper (this is true. I had to do it, and the shop called CA DOJ to confirm it). They swipe your DL, and you can have them change the address to your physical.

does your CA ID/DL have your current correct address on it? If so, that is all you need (assuming you are a US citizen). If not, then federal law requires you to have a .gov-issued document with your name and adress on it.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

I don't own a pistol and have obviously never gone through the process, but IIRC, all pistol transactions require two forms of ID no matter what.

                    Sorry, I stand corrected...

I always use D/L and 90 days of PG&E guess that what counts as 2nd proof of address...I thought this was used to proof 90 days of residency....

having to prove "90 days of residency" is a federal req that only applies if you aren't a US citizen.

I wouldn't support a store that makes my compliance with california gun laws harder than they need to be.
