I always ask about discounts on any large purchase. If anybody at any store told me to "pound sand" I would leave and (probably) not come back. There are plenty of acceptable responses to a request for a discount, "no" is definitely one of them.Comment

I'd try price-matching as opposed to negotiating, but with Interstate Tax and Transfer Fees nowadays, Gun Shops seem to have the upper hand at the moment.Comment

thanks for all the help guys. just something i was wondering before my next gun purchase. i have no problem keeping good local shops in business but it never hurts to ask right.
checked out cordovas site and they have a huge list haha.
my next purchases will be a upper for my AR, HD 12ga (870 hopefully), AK, and .357 revolver.
in that order unless i come upon a deal of course.
do you guys think the prices at cordova are fair? esp. the ruger LCR and the 870 express.Comment

I would go to river city exchange they have the best prices and selection in Sacramento
Most of the guys in there are very helpful they have used and new gun
Plus it a lot closer to elk grove only half mile off hwy 99 on fruitridge
Cordova shooting center doesn't have a huge selection Of guns.
also might want to try sts gun in Folsom they opened 3 week ago but have a large selection on handguns at good price very friendly they will order any thing u want if they don't have itEldorado rod and gun club member

how come when I used that math I was SAVING money because I was really gonna buy anyways but my ex-gf was saving money on every sale in the store by spending more... I wish I could save money that fast!!I think if you go about it the right way, drop hints that it might just be out of your price range and you wish it was this price, etc. then some small shops might be able to budge. Keep in mind, they do put stuff on sale sometimes, so you know they can take a little less in some cases.
Another option..........When I bought my XD9 I really just went to shoot it with no intention of walking out having bought one. Afterwords I told the guy I really liked it and I asked him what they were charging for one. It was about the same as another shop. I just told him okay and that I would think about it.
Rather then see me walk out the door he did offer me one other option. They had one left in an essentials package, which was just the gun, mags, and cable lock. So, I lost the fancy foam case (that I wouldn't have kept the gun in anyways - and it still came in a plastic case), a holster that I wouldn't have used, a 2 mag holder, and the loader, but I saved $100 on the gun over all. Plus, I got it on Springfield's special so I ended up getting 3 extra magazines and a 2 mag holder via a mial in rebate type thing. Not to mention the guy waived my $70 in range fees from renting some guns that day.
So, I ended up saving $100 on the gun overall without really losing anything I wanted from the package. I ended up saving $70 on the range fees, and I go the 3 free magazines and 2 mag holder from the company, which is like $100 depending on where you buy them, and I would have bought some more eventually.
So, in all, that is like saving $270 on the gun. How was I going to pass that up. So, you could look for opportunities like that.

your first time at a mom and pop shop and they dont know you from anyone else, "No" might be exactly the answer you get, because they dont have a spectacular line of tennis racquets, softballs and bats and swimming apparel to offset their losses on undercutting firearm sales...
meanwhile, that guy at MPS has a store to run, a rent to pay, a mortgage to pay, and a family to feed... but you want to hit him up for discounts. Ouch!
I was at a shop I've done business with some, and this guy is there, I personally hadn't seen him before but he had quite clearly done some business there before, and he's calling the guys running the shop by the wrong names... and trying to chisel them down here and there on everything... and bragging about how much he has on this house, and that boat and the new truck... DUDE... seriously... he needed to stfu.... in fact I really would have liked to explain to him, but some people are just too damned stupid to listen.
People like that are what make it hard to negotiate on a price. If you want MPS to price compare vs online, you should probably rethink which one you really like shopping at. If you want to "click" buy, then by all means do it! but if you want to show up, be treated like a customer and not a page hit, and ask questions of a professional and get answers from a professional... then you should probably think twice about doing business online... saving 5 dollars probably doesnt cost you anything, the profit margin at the local mom and pop gunshop might be a LOT and just enough for them to keep doing business and giving you the service you would like to get.Comment

The prices at The Gun Room are the HIGH! Go to Bills or RCGE.Comment

At Turner's if the gun is on sale, they won't budge, but if it's not on sale, I've been able to talk them down. This is how I picked up my new Colt XSE for $997.

J&R in Livermore is a good shop and will take care of loyal customers.
I was doing a PPT there last Friday and asked if they had any Mega GTR-3S lowers. They didn't have them, but since they actually wanted to sell me a gun, and I wanted to buy a gun, they ordered one. I paid the going rate online for it, they made a sale, and I bought some high margin stuff as well.
I don't understand the mentality of a gun shop who won't negotiate on price. Another local shop to me charges $199 for a transfer of something bought online if he can get it, and he refuses to negotiate prices down to a realistic level if he does have it. My solution was to give 100% of my business to J&R, which has made them and I very happy. They get my money (a lot of it) and I get excellent service. For Sale: Off Roster Handgun Moving Sale
