    question about gun store prices

so, i've never bought a new gun i know, only used ones from members and friends. but my question is, is buying a gun like buying a car where you can negotiate price with them? maybe i've been watching too much pawn stars and american guns.

    thanks

Depends on the store. Big chain store like Turner's, probably not. Smaller shops, maybe if you go about it the right way and you're talking to the right guy.

I've had some luck lately getting my local gun store to meet me halfway when I tell them "Here's what I can get it for online, I'd rather support your store so can you work with me on the price a little?"

Stores have more overhead, so I don't expect them to match an internet price, but I don't mind paying a few bucks more to buy something in a brick and mortar store where I can see it and touch it first and not have to wait for/pay for shipping.

You can certainly ask. The worst they can say is no. I've gotten about $25 off for a lower priced item <$400. For something around $2500-$3000 you may get about $100 or more off.

ya thats what i was thinking too. but honesty a lot of prices i've seen online are just as expensive or even more than the stores. but i guess i'll show my face in the stores some more so they can get to know me, i'm sure that will make it easier too.

Post your specific gun and price on here. People will tell you whether it's in the ballpark.

I've seen prices over $130 over the lowest in the LA area.

I don't mind spending a bit more at a local gun shop I like with good customer service.

I'd rather spend more at one I like than support one I don't to save a little bit.

Thanks. That's exactly how I feel. Last time I was there I over heard a guy say the Taurus he was buying there was 125 more at the gun store that was literally down the street. They have been known to be over priced though :/

You know, gun shops make usually less than 18% on a gun. That's not even enough to pay for the rent. If you're working with a mom&pop kinda shop just let them make the bloody cash on the gun. If you're not working with a mom&pop then they won't negotiate at all anyway and you can save your breath. The LGS at least had the courtesy to let you fondle it before owning it.

I buy guns at my local gunshop as often as possible. Every once in a while I'll break down and get a big-5 gun but for the most part I am willing to spend a tad more for competent service in a place that doesn't sell baseball mitts more often than guns.

I think if you go about it the right way, drop hints that it might just be out of your price range and you wish it was this price, etc. then some small shops might be able to budge. Keep in mind, they do put stuff on sale sometimes, so you know they can take a little less in some cases.

Another option..........When I bought my XD9 I really just went to shoot it with no intention of walking out having bought one. Afterwords I told the guy I really liked it and I asked him what they were charging for one. It was about the same as another shop. I just told him okay and that I would think about it.

Rather then see me walk out the door he did offer me one other option. They had one left in an essentials package, which was just the gun, mags, and cable lock. So, I lost the fancy foam case (that I wouldn't have kept the gun in anyways - and it still came in a plastic case), a holster that I wouldn't have used, a 2 mag holder, and the loader, but I saved $100 on the gun over all. Plus, I got it on Springfield's special so I ended up getting 3 extra magazines and a 2 mag holder via a mial in rebate type thing. Not to mention the guy waived my $70 in range fees from renting some guns that day.

So, I ended up saving $100 on the gun overall without really losing anything I wanted from the package. I ended up saving $70 on the range fees, and I go the 3 free magazines and 2 mag holder from the company, which is like $100 depending on where you buy them, and I would have bought some more eventually.

So, in all, that is like saving $270 on the gun. How was I going to pass that up. So, you could look for opportunities like that.

You can always ask. Prices are also negotiable....the problem is getting far enough up the chain of command to speak to someone who can negotiate.

Best best is to shop around for deals.

Turner's Outdoorsman sometimes has OK deals, but I've found that OC Shooting Range and OC Armory are able to get some new guns for cheaper than Turners can sell even with a sale!

Lately, the gun show in Costa Mesa has actually been a winner....it was unbelievable. I got a new M1A Scout for $1400 from Quantico Tactical....cheapest Turner's could do was $1699.

In the end though....the best deals are here on Calguns. Right after I bought my Glock 30sf for $525, I came here to see that someone was selling theres for $500, but it came with 5 magazines, night sights, and a crap load of stuff and owner claims only 400 rounds through it....

from that point forward I knew only to buy brand new guns if I couldn't find it on calguns used.

Super if you're in EG like me you might want to check Cordova Shooting Center's prices they have listed on their site also.

Depending on what your looking for you might be surprised.

i thought cordova didn't sell, just rent?!

anyway, i was really talking about the gun room and wild bills. i also have to check out river city and the stores towards roseville one of these days.

I figured you were talking about Wild Bill's and The Gun Room when you mentioned they were down the street from one another. I've checked both out and find WBs to typically have better prices (only looked at handguns).
Someone else suggested checking Cordova in another thread and I found their prices on Ruger revolvers and Glocks to be better than both WBs and The Gun Room for the models I was researching.

This thread is funny as soon as you said the taurus was 125 cheaper right down the street I knew the shops you were referring to... That tracker at the gr is 615 and at wb its 489... Pretty insane difference imo... However even though I would never buy a gun from the gun room I'm starting to like it more.. The customer service at the range has seemed to have gotten better over the years.
