IMO Practice the fundamentals with .22lr then graduate those skills to the centerfire.

Trigger & breath control practice. If your .22 gear is QUALITY, and your range is CQB, marksmanship quality can also be raised.

A number of "Precision Rifle" match directors now offer a 22lr match due to the price of match grade 308/260/etc.

It seems just about all serious high power shooters have at least 1 22 laying around... One guy had a US Optics SN3 on a 22lr... Yeah- I was JEALIOUS!

If you dont think it helps, You're doing it WRONG.

Someone mentioned accuracy at 100 yds. Well, depends on the rifle and the barrel. Some achieve high levels of accuracy at that range. If yours doesnt, move the target in closer, but use SMALL, challenging targets.

I want a quality pellet rifle and pistol just to practise in my backyard. If you dont think there are quality airguns out there, that are FAR more accurate than most of us will ever be.... You're mistaken. The problem is finding a decent one with a decent price just for practice-- instead of a top of the line competition setup.

For me, skill at arms is very perishable. The more rounds I fire, the more persistant the skill and I get better at it.

So, for me, the more shooting I can do the better. I often slide the Ciener .22 conversion onto my Beretta 92 and proceed to blast through 100s of rounds. It helps develope my muscle memory for later use in action pistol matches.

I also use the exact same mechanics shooting my Marlin 795 as I do with my 300 mag. Personally, I would much rather be buying .22s for those fundamentals than be buying 300 mag ammo.
