    Gun Oil Test

I'm going to say up front that this probably isn't 100% scientific in nature, so don't criticize my methods unless you go out and do it yourself.

I wanted to test a couple of things to see how they do in resisting rust. I live within earshot of the beach, and things rust around here really easy. It requires constant vigilance to make sure my firearms stay rust free.

Prep: I took 4 nails and cleaned them up on my sander to make sure all rust preventative from the factory was ground away and I had bare metal to start with. You will notice from the pictures that only about 1 1/2" is the part that I ground down. Had to have something to hold onto and not burn my fingers! I then sprayed them off with brake cleaner and wiped them all down with a paper towel. I used surgical gloves throughout to prevent oils from my hands from contacting the metal.

Contestants: 1 nail is control and has nothing on it. A shovel left out overnight here will be really rusted by morning, so I anticipate this nail will be really rusted in the morning. The others have one of these 3 oils on them:

Initial photo: From left to right: Royal Purple, Rem Oil, bare nail turned 180 degrees from the other 3, and the right one is DuraLube.

I am going to try and remember to take a picture first thing in the morning as light allows. Tonight's picture was taken at 4:05pm.

Who is betting on which one of these 3 products to provide the best rust prevention? I can tell you that the DuraLube by far felt the slipperiest in my fingers when I was applying the products.

    Thoughts?

I think duralube will have the least because the viscosity is higher and will protect the nail longer, versus the other two “lighter” gun oils...

Excellent point. When I sprayed the Royal Purple, it built up on the nail and I had to shake off the excess. The Rem Oil was so light, it was almost like water and there was nothing to shake off. The DuraLube was certainly the thickest and required the most shaking to get rid of the excess. However, the DuraLube and the Royal Purple weren't that far apart it seems like.

So, viscosity plays into rust prevention? Interesting.

Well, I would are argue that the viscosity will affect how well the trial area remains protected.

If the oil runs off, or evaporates, or otherwise disappears to quickly it will leave an unprotected area open for rust...

No feeling either way, this will be interesting.

            IBTFLFB take over...

I’ve seen other tests like the one Choprzrul is doing.
Last one I saw put WD40 as one of the top winners, can’t find the thread in my bookmarks though.

            Here are some other tests:

Of course, these types of tests have been done before---the last one I read about (several years ago) showed the winner as Breakfree CLP---thats what I have been using for the last 20+ years (maybe longer) and all weapons run just fine and NO RUST!

Part of the fun of owning firearms and cleaning them is the endless search for something better to use. Trying new things. Same thing with car wax. Who does not have a cupboard full of half empty bottles of wax?

An aircraft mechanic friend of mine swears by Corrosion X. He lives in Monterey and uses it on his ocean boat as well as airplanes.

                      Tagged,

and also, I have yet to see anybody else use the same lubes that I do. I'm tempted to do a test of my own, as I would definitely put them up against FL or any other lube. I use these lubes daily in the dairy industry, where all of the equipment is cleaned with a caustic chlorine solution, followed by a heavy acid cleaner every 12 hrs. This same equipment is also subject to being covered in cow crap and pee and water all day long.

I use Fluid-film spray, it's amazing. It works great on my guns, but I also spray down my jet-ski engines with it. After 20 years of running in the ocean, the engines look brand new, with just a rinse and re-spray after each trip.

                      Fluid-Film

Secondly, I use LubriFilm grease. This stuff is the slipperiest grease I have ever found, and it stays slippery when its hot, freezing, wet, covered in crap, etc... Very good stuff.

Corrosion X is an xlint product. Ran 2 different boats in salt water for over 8 years. One boat was outboards the other twin diesels. Hose the engines down with fresh water after use and spray with Corrosion X. Not to mention all the exposed electrical terminals. No corrosion or rust.

Take it from me, for what is designed for it works!!
