It's your hearing but I prefer to err on the side of caution and use 3M disposable plugs and MSA/Sordin Supreme Pro X ear muffs.

After watching that video some months ago, I realized how well foam earplugs work when inserted correctly.

That being said, at indoor ranges, I double up with muffs.

I use them and never have a problem with them at the outdoor ranges

          always use Muffs indoors

use both whenever a .50BMG is involved

I just wanted to report my experience. I always use both muffs and foam plugs indoors and usually both outdoors. I never had a problem like this before with other foam plugs. The weather wasn't cold at Angeles Range so expansion should not be an issue. I will look into the Howard Leight products but I still think that something was wrong with the plugs I used.

Proper insertion! I ride a motorcycle to work daily and work in an industrial setting, wearing them at least 10 hours a day. Especially on the bike, if I don't put them in right and let them expand, the wind noise bugs me more than if I were wearing no plugs at all

I always double up. Foam plugs and ear muffs at the same time.

I prefer the Micky mouse muffs myself.

Muffs are great but I couldn't obtain good stock cheek weld with the basic ones I have.

Seconded. I do double up on indoor ranges, but TBH I don't know why, maybe the shape of my head just doesn't like muffs.

Honestly you're better off doubled up when shooting. The only time I don't do this is when I'm in a rimfire-only range.

Take a look at this thread.

Why do people say to always use muffs indoor?

i would think that an indoor range would be louder and you would want the better protection that plugs provide over muffs?

Because people still can't understand that they've probably been using foam earplugs wrong their entire life.

Plus at an indoor range you're probably shooting a handgun, so you can use gigantic earmuffs.

I use the same orange Winchester foam plugs from Walmart. I've always rolled them up and inserted them into my ear and let the foam expand before shooting (you can feel them close up the ear canal and you can't hear anything afterwards).

I always double up with electronic muffs at the indoor range. With those on, you can still clearly hear people talking around you, even with foam plugs in. Outdoors, it depends on what I'm shooting and what I'm doing, and also on the weather.

Are the Howard Leight foam plugs using a different material than the orange Winchester foam plugs? Are they softer or absorb/block more sound waves? Just wondering if it's worth picking up and trying out or to just stick with what's working for me now.

Hearing protection is one of my pet peeves with people.

Folks spent a crap load of money on guns, ammo and gear and they come to class with the crappiest eye and ear pro.....

Always double up indoors. Use high quality foam plugs and good muffs.
If the foam plugs dont offer you great protection throw them out and buy something else.
