I use howard leights banded at work for quick on & off (I answer the phone a lot) with the flared cone but I don't trust them for shooting.
Anything .357 mag and up I like to use plugs & muffs.
My worst day shooting is better than my best day at work.

In California we're called "Wacko right-wing gun toting nut jobs with an arsenal" most other states just call us People.

Is it possible that he cold weather prevented them from expanding as normal because the foam was too cold?

Maybe it wasn't expanded all the way? I know a friend who couldn't get his to sit right in one ear and it left it ringing when we started shooting. I always put it in far enough and give it time to expand. When I can't hear my nails tapping on wood I know it's good.

I haven't had any issue with the Winchester foam plugs, maybe you had an old package and plugs weren't re-expanding all the way or something?

You do know that no two persons ears are the same. What doesn't work for you may be fine with someone else. I own a pair of those plugs you describe. They work great for me.

so while you were using them they worked fine but for some reason you had ringing ears? did they not work while using them but you still kept shooting?

That's what I'm thinking. For me, plugs always work better than muffs.

So... you got earplugs that might not fit your ears(and didn't bother to check this before going to the range?), didn't verify that you inserted them properly

How is this supposed to serve as a warning to anyone other than to make sure your equipment works?

I never thought foam ear worked well. In the Army, we were issued these rubber ones that came in a few sizes. They were stepped and went in like an arrow, easy in, harder to pull out if that makes sense. They worked ok but you really had to seat them well and sometimes it felt like you blew out your ear drum if you put them in too fast.

If you lost those they gave us the cheap yellow foams, those sucked. A guy at work gave me the orange soft, but non porus foams. They work great. I looked at the bag and they are Howard Leights. Expensive but they work the best by far of any in the ear canal ears I have tried. I would still double up, I like to hear.

Good video. Going to use that at our next tailgate safety meeting.

If you guys are wearing those stiff, cylinder ones(usually come in yellow), those suck, no wonder your ears are ringing. Might as well wear nothing at all.

Actually they can work just fine for most people as long as you insert them properly.

The problem is that most people(hell, probably 99%) don't know how to properly insert earplugs. If you put them in like the video I linked and they still don't work, then it's probably your ears and you need to find something else. If you don't put them in like the video I linked, you're doing it wrong and shouldn't expect them to work.

You could be right, but those soft ones are just easier to work with. The stiffness of the yellow ones could lead to more people using them improperly though.

But it's still possible to use them correctly, so you might as well use them correctly.
