I have and I have discussed it with the wife. In event of a fire, grab firearms, load car, drive fast

For an indefinite situation? As much as you can get.

For a flood/earthquake, I'd say a couple hundred rounds - 1k total should do you fine. For a california falls into the ocean earthquake, I'd say maybe a few more thousand depending on if we keep sinking or not. :P

      I personally have about 3k 9mm (500 jhp, rest fmj), 1k various 12ga 2 3/4 and 3" (about 100 in buck, rest in birdshot), 200 7.62x54r and 3-4k .22lr.

I have 2 stand by clips each aside from the ones already in the firearms. I have two ARs, one's configured for long range (i.e. scope, bipod, etc.) the other's for close quarters. Then I just have one handgun, a 40SW. I figured, anything a bit more than 2-3 mags, you'd be dropping them left and right trying to situate yourself, move, duck, run for cover, whatever.

In terms of what encounters, I'm anticipating encounters with all manners of low life out to hurt all that I care about. This everything ranging from people stealing gas out of my truck, steal water, food, whatever.

At the most, I can probably carry one of the rifles and the handgun or just the rifle. I've played out a scenario in my head where I'd leave the hand gun to my signficant other to protect herself and my kids while I go to another part of the house, etc., leave the other rifle to another family member, possibly my dad whom I suspect probably would've come over already with my mom to draw strength in numbers as a family unit.

The way I see it now, I have 1k rounds in a readily moveable ammo box per firearm that you can carry with should the need arise where you have to relocate. And that in itself isn't necessarily on the feather light side in terms of weight! I figured, one rifle in one hand and one ammo box in the other, extra clips in a small back pack pouch and I'll still be pretty mobile. Like Sloguy said, there are folks who can't even carry empty mags let alone racked ones!

Anything more, I might as well stay put and sometimes, staying put works really good but not when the place you're staying in is falling apart or burning down.

I'm all for the 5K rounds (or even the 20K good Lord!) because the more in this case, is the better but what's the solution when you have to move?

Do you guys think about these scenarios like I do or you don't really even think about it at all?

and 30cal or 50cal U.S. ammo cans work great for storing ammo due the rubber seal they have in the lids.

Well, like GlockMan19 said, with many different firearms requiring different calibers, I just went with the 2 different calibers I have, one happens to be a hand gun.

My brother picked up all kinds of nice guns from a Beretta, a 1911, a glock, H&K, Sig, all with different calibers! Along with a shotgun, an AR and who knows what else he's getting these days. At first I was pretty impressed with the variety he had then reality kindda hit me in terms of a situation where you're fumbling for reloads while getting shot at and you got all manners of calibers all over the place trying to find the right one to fit the right mag to fit on the right firearm! Christ!

I know I'll be able to conserve ammo, and no, I won't be looking for the fight, never have historically, if anything, it'll be strictly a defense scenario on my part. If some lowlifes are trying to drive a pick up straight at my door or slash my tires so I won't be able to get my family out to safety and they're trying to box me in, I will pop you if I see you in my crosshairs.

But let's keep this in mind though, this is in a state of civil unrest where all hell's shot to sh*t.

If that very same scenario where to happen on an given quiet night where I see a perp out to slash my tires, I'll just calmly call the cops.
That's after I stomp a mudhole in 'em first though. Just to keep them from getting away scott free!

By the way, Turner's got a sale on .223 ammo. $6.98 over the usual $8.99 I believe?

That's actually how I got to thinking in the first place how much ammo do I really need! Apparently what I got wasn't enough!

I don't understand the whole thousands of ammo stockpile. For most SHTF scenarios you will need to relocate to a safer spot so there is no way you can carry thousands of ammo of different calibers. If you needed to move a couple hundred rounds MAX is all you can take.

You don't carry the thousands of rounds at once, You bury it in sealed containers and come back to it when needed.

You carry what you have in your B.O.B. for the first few days.

if you have two nice big suv's you can carry all the ammo you need. plus 400 rounds of x54r ammo stacks in a 30cal and about 400 rounds of 8mm fits in a 50cal with about 200 x54r rounds as well.

Isn't there some kind of law that limits how much ammo or reloading supplies one person can own at any time in Kali?

There doesn't appear to be any laws limiting the quantity of ammo you can own, but there is a limit on black powder.

Also, check to see whether there are any clauses in the fine print of your home insurance. I have heard the number 10,000rds being used on some policies.

I doubt you are going use all that ammo at one time so only keeping a few loaded mags and rest in long term storage is a good idea.

Realistically if all hell brakes loose you probably wont be home. I think the battle field pick up then becomes the scenario so know what your looking for. In case urban hell brakes loose well I try to concentrate on 2 specific calibers and 1500 per. Recently with local laws changing here in Sac though I admit I have been stocking up with others and ammo will never go down in price. Some one else may say something different but from what ive read ammo in a fire will not go off like what you would expect. My 2 cents on everything going south is it probably wont happen to us but it may to my kids so I want them to be prepared as well. Now im going to put my helmet back on and go to the bomb cellar.
